I've decided I prefer the Gen 1 for overall size, toughness and body style. Now seriously looking. Since you can't access the Xtra Cab from the outside, does this become a nuisance at times, like trying to get something from behind the front seats? I do not need the rear space for passengers, since I have 2 other vehicles. This scenario comes to mind: Got a few items, bags, whatever in your hands and it'd raining like a cow pissing on a fat rock and you have to fold the front seat forward. Unless I'm missing something important, I'm thinking I don't need no stinking rear doors.

With the seats folded and slid forward I can get pretty much everything I need in and out. Put a couple hockey bags back there with no issues..

Maybe I'd want the doors just for convenience sake but the 2 door works fine for me.

When I was looking for my truck, I was decided between a Ranger or 1st gen Tacoma; I made the right choice. But one thing I liked about the Ranger were the suicide doors.
To answer your question though, it can be a bit of a pain to get to the back. The seats fold forward easily, but if you have something big it can be a little cumbersome to maneuver around if you're holding it with one hand(ex: toolbox), but it's really not that big of a deal. It is a pain to try to get in the back to sit, but you said you won't be carrying passengers anyways. Sure, half doors would make it easier to access the rear of the cab, but I love my Xtra Cab the way it is.

I don't want anyone or anything back there. The dead hookers go in the bed with everything else

yea, if it's raining and I come out of a store I usually put things up front. Dogs get in the back seats but they don't complain much as long as they get to go.

Advantage of no rear door is more structural rigidity and the extra door does not rattle. A previous Chevrolet I had rattled the 3rd door from day one....

I do like them for the convenience on my second gen but it is not a must have for me.

If I could still have a 6 foot bed with 4 doors, I would be on board for 4 doors. Otherwise, happy with my x-cab.

Like others have said, it would often be nice to have the extra clamshell doors, but it's not a necessity by any means. The main downside to getting things in from behind the front seat is that you often have to tilt larger items sideways to get them past the front seat.

I have a second gen AC my mate's got a 1st gen ExC and though I like his truck a lot the one thing I hate is it doesn't have the AC doors. Being able to butterfly open the whole cab makes working on things so much easier, and removing the seats is a breeze. (Especially helpful for cleaning or so you can laydown on the floor to do wiring under the dash.) A LOT more space and more usable cubbies in the 2nd AC back seat area. The rear seats are just as useless in both though.

Two things I like on his over mine, the Line-x'ed steel bed and less electrogizmo's to go bad.

You really can't go wrong with either, I would never want a SC or a DC so the AC is perfect, I'd be happy in either one but I love my suicide doors and leg room in my 2nd!

When my kids were growing up, the access cab doors would have been nice more for them. But they didn't have any problems climbing in and out of the extracab. As for me...I've owned it for almost 17 years, and I don't even think about it being a hassle.

Yes. It's one of the few things I'm envious about with the 2nd & 3rd gens...

    Pretty much stock right now
I had a 2nd gen loaner for a week while my truck was in for repairs a few years back. Those doors are nice.

The worst problem I have with mine is getting my big toolbox in and out of the back. The pas seat just doesn't get far enough out of the way. And the box has to be empty so I can make all the maneuvers necessary to get it out. So I normally leave it in and just take out the tool I need.

Otherwise, I wouldn't change anything. (Although when I had the loaner, I was real close to trading the 1st gen in on a 2nd gen.)

That is the only thing I would change on my truck. Love the size and space of the xtra cab, but a 3rd door would be great.

Pretty much what everybody else has said on here. Having doors that open would be nice, however it's not a massive inconvenience to just fold down the seats.
