If I were you, and I was confident in doing this service accurately and carefully, I would perform the simple drain and fill.

****They are missing one step in the original post on this thread. You have to remove the jumper wire from the OBDII port after entering temp check mode, but BEFORE removing the overflow plug. Very important.

What about transfer case and gear box's? There's nothing in the manual about servicing them. Ash service technicians at toyota and said said that they don't mention it in manual either. Wouldn't really say if it would void warranty or not. Just kept saying it not in the manual

As for fluid change? In my maintenance manual it says to change every 30k miles for diffs and transfer case.

Find it hard to believe that some guys think by draining 2-3 qts their trucks are now miraculously shifting better. Riiggghhtttt

I hate that modern day auto repair practices make a vehicle owner even consider that servicing your vehicles fluid will void a warranty.

The dealership I purchased it from has a lifetime power train warranty. Motor, tranny, transfer and gear boxes forever. I would think they would want them serviced regularly but they mentioned it wasn't in the manual. I'll probably just get em all done at the same time if they won't let me diy

I hear what you're saying, but I think you've misunderstood something. Simply draining 2-3 qts. then refilling the same amount won't affect shifting performance. I believe that the extra 1/2 to 3/4 qts. that I needed to add to the original amount that was drained is what improved shifting performance. If the transmission was 1/2 to 3/4 qt. low, by draining/refilling my transmission to the correct level, it would make sense that shifting performance would improve.

Does this make any sense? =)

Gotcha. I hear what you are saying now. Even so, if they are underfilled by less then a qt not sure if that would actually affect performance ( I could see 2-3 qts under), but if it did help in your case that's awesome.

Its been common here with the autos with low fluid to have some shift issues. Especially in the cold months. Mine slips a little until its warm in the winter. I suspect its slightly low.

I feel the same way partially. I didn't expect that small of a change in fluid quantity to affect shifting, but it's noticeable. I'm super skeptical and somewhat of a pessimistic person by nature. I'm quite aware of the power of the "butt dyno" affect which can make someone "feel" like something has changed, when it's actually his brain tricking him into thinking so in the first place.

I also changed spark plugs. I reused the same plug gapped to the same .043 spec, and I can tell that the engine idles/runs smoother. The original plugs looked like they had undergone normal wear for 30,000 miles.
