I took my 1st short road trip with my 2020 Tacoma yesterday.
210 miles round trip. TRD PRO with 32" tall tires.
Set the cruise on 70 and ran the AC the whole time. Not exactly level terrain her in central NC.
Transmission kicked down several times sending the revs up to 3500 on some hills.
When all was said and done the computer said an even 22 mpg.
If I adjust for the added tire size I was running over 73 mph. (Waze confirmed during the trip).
And for the extra miles ran not calculated by the computer. I really averaged over 23 mpg.
Not too shabby in my mind. Pushing a brick at over 70 mph with 32" tires.

[EDIT] Please see page 4. For real world 3 week daily driven. Miles vs gallons used.
[EDIT-2] Please see page 6 for 2nd repeat miles vs gallons used.
    Update page 7.
[EDIT] Please see page 10. For 3rd and final repeat real world trial. Dash calculator spot on with miles vs. gallons used.

I find that very odd. I have a similar set up and struggle to get 17mpg and that is in the flats of Florida. I actually get worse on the highway because of the over revving and with the cruise on it is miserable because the tranny isn't smart enough to kick back down. You may want to check your odometer and make sure it is accurate.

I'm only getting 13 mpg on 33" tires. My tundra on 33" tires gets better mileage.

I didn't use my odometer as I know it's slightly off due to the tires. I used GPS. Miles. Both Google Maps and Waze calculated the same miles. I also didn't calculate the mpg by the miles. I used the mpg given by the truck.

I don't know what altitude that's at but I got unbelievable mpg through parts of Colorado. Normally I'm at 17 through Missouri hills with 33s and 4.88

Id bet actual mpg calculated properly by miles / gallons used is quite a bit less than 23.

    Yeah, yeah.
    TRIP mileage or TANK mileage?
TANK mileage matters 'cuz that's really what your fuel cost is based on.
I can set up a trip and push my TRIP mileage to 23+ MPG.
But overall TANK MPGs are running between 17 & 19+ MPG.

Possibly, but when I've checked the mileage mpg vs. the calculated mpg before. They're close. But its been a while.

Tank mileage. I filled the truck up the day before, drove it home and parked it in the garage. Started it the next morning and made my trip. Only mpg reset done was the auto one at fill up.

Yeah, and it was a 4 cylinder to. My buddy had 33'' tires on his 2019 trd, and struggled to get 18 mpg at 65 mph. Something don't add up.

One thing that I noticed is that if you overfill the tank (fill the filler neck), it actually has an effect on MPGs on the dash. Not sure if you did that or not. I found this out on a couple of road trips that I was trying to squeeze a few extra miles out of a tank. I normally just stop filling once the auto-shutoff clicks - calculated multiple times and it seems to be very accurate this way.

After I got back yesterday afternoon. I ran around town and done a few errands. Then drove to work this morning 50/50 city/highway.
This cut the tank average some. Still tank average 1/2 tank. And no 4 cyl.

    I usually round it up the the nearest $0.25 after the auto click off. $ 38.69 -> $38.75, $ 40.17 -> $40.25 etc.
Gas at $3.30 a gallon Sunday. I doubt a few cents at that price would make any difference.

Probably not - I put in almost a full gallon extra on my road trips and got about an extra MPG over my expected MPGs. Which makes sense because it's a full "unaccounted for" gallon's worth of miles (an extra 20-25 miles in my case).

could it be steeper downhills than uphills on the particular route that OP took? Lots of rolling momentum?

Also I was using the trucks computer mpg calculator. Not calculating it by miles driven and gallons used from the tank.

Same route both ways except opposite direction. Longer rolling momentum one way, meant a longer uphill the other direction.

Measure the travel distance of a hot tire. Double check results against a calculated factor based on adjustment from factory tire size/brand and replacement tire, adjust for pressure.

Apply the factor to odometer reading from your trip.
Double check trip mileage with an accurate GPS (not cellular position) for consistency.

Measure the fuel used with the triple click pump technique.

    Run the numbers.

Complain the calculation method must be wrong because the number is lower than hoped.

Would take too much time. And would give you a different result if you did it 10 times. But you could do an average of the 10 for better accuracy.
So not worth the effort. IMO.
