Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Have you ever tried to rent a vehicle without a credit card ?

I have yet to find a company that takes a cash payment or as a deposit.

You do understand This is not that much weight .

Quite different when your grossing 150,000 pounds in your trash trailer coming out of the city

I can't zoom in on the trailer to see, but those double axle rental trailers usually have hydraulic hitch brakes.

    This thread is almost comical.

    OP got the job done.
    And no one was hurt.
There’s a big difference in towing something, and knowing how to tow something.

I know people, and have seen people, pulling trailers weighing less than 3000lbs that shouldn’t be on the road.

Thank you all for your concerns. Trust me i am not some moron who would put this load on the highway or anything dumb like that. I took the payload through empty backroads the whole way home and the 4 hour trip took me 6 hours driving very cautious and starting braking approx 500 meters before any stop and kept a probably 20 car lengths at all times to any car infront of me. The total load weight was 5980lbs, in my tacomas manual it says with the factory tow package it can tow up to 6000lbs. Yes I agree with you all on how dangerous towing something at max capacity can be but my truck does have fresh brakes all around brand new shocks and springs all front end suspension components and it has the factory tow package with the bigger brakes already. That being said i dont recommend this drive but if youre in a pinch and need to boogie something down the road a couple kilometres, Look at the specs of your truck, check the condition of all your important towing components, look in your manual to see how much your taco is rated to pull and drive real cautious. There were plenty of times that im sure people were upset behind me because i was doing 40 in a 60 but the safety of myself my passenger and the others on the road was more important that their schedule. Im just sharing my experience as to me it was a pretty big testament to the capabilities of my old truck.

You don’t have to explain yourself man.
Some people just like to talk. Ignore them.

I’ve towed more with my old 1999 3.4 than you you did. I guess I’ll start sharing the hate with you.

what's comical about wanting people to drive responsibly? guess i don't have a sense of humor. if OP was stuck somewhere and HAD to tow home, I get it. more power to him. but if you have the option to spend a little more money and rent a bigger truck to get the job done, why not do it?

you can drive drunk, make it home "safely" with nobody getting hurt - doesn't mean it's the right thing to do

You apparently have no idea how surge brakes work. They’re fine. Uhaul would not rent a car hauler without brakes. And ease off the negligent homicide crap dude.

whenever uhaul asks, I’m towing a VW bug

Mostly the people that don’t know what they are talking about.
I bet most didn’t even look up the GVWR or Towing capacity.
    They just assumed.

Sure, OP was at max limit.
And sure, there are better to pull it with?
But being a total prick to OP because “you think” doesn’t cut it with me.
OP said the load was @ 5,980lns. And unless someone can prove other wise, I’m not sure they can say what is or isn’t safe

I guess if anything, the lack of a sway device might have been “unsafe”.
But yet, no one has even mentioned it.

i think all the pushback has been based on the fact that the tacoma tow rating is 5k lbs (and that's if you have the right hitch, who knows if OP does) and he was pulling 6k lbs. not too hard to see why that is wrong. i would honestly say with these little trucks that towing even at the limit of 5k, while lawful and totally doable, is pretty shitty. these things are light and generally do not tow very well, so maxing out and surpassing the limit is no bueno.

i think people get mad because we have families and we have to share the road with people intentionally making poor decisions just to save a few bucks. lying to uhaul about what you are towing is not cool, it's stupid. but hey... if you don't think that is stupid, to each his own i guess.

i have no hard feelings against the OP, glad he made it work, just think if you are towing heavy - spend the extra $20-$50 to rent a full size for the day. no harm done and your pockets are barely lighter

I will agree that Toyota was definitely liberal when giving out towing capacities.
6,000 lbs on the 2nd Gen is pushing it. Even worse on a 1st Gen.

But it can be done. It’s just not ideal.

    Shit OP,
We towed a international scout on a dual axle trailer with a F150 straight through from VA to SC one rainy winter night. Found one tire on the trailer blown and gone when we got back but made it ok. Much younger then and maybe a little beer involved. Good job and glad you made it safe. And you ain't lived till you have a side loader with 4-80' poles just get faster when you push the brakes.

I drove through a Jack in the Box drive thru one cheery night after playing some Battlefield 3 in college and managed to haul away the "please drive forward" sign with me under my 06' civic. I told my bud who was with me "it said please drive forward" :D

Long story short don't make bad habits a habit.
