buy that book I linked to. It lists all the 4x4 rock crawling trails in CA, and ranks them in order of difficulty, so you can start on an easy trail and work your way up. It has GPS coordinates, descriptions of each obstacle, pictures, expectations, and more. It's a great book and everyone who wheels in CA should get it. A lot of the trails in the book are mellow, but it also lists the Rubicon, Fordyce, slickrock, and quite a few other hardcore trails. We use the Moab edition all the time here in Utah.

Cool looks pretty informative. What kind of rear suspension setup do you have?

my truck specs are in my build thread in my signature. OME Dakkar rear springs with OME nitrosport shocks. I'm very happy with them, though they've sagged a little bit in the past few months. I've had custom alcans, which were very nice, but these ride every bit as well at 1/3 the price.

Really great vid! Thanks for taking the time to edit and post it. Watching it is the closest my DC is getting to that trail!

The books Sixstringsteve recommended are really good. I have both Northern and Southern books. Sadly I've since moved away from CA to Arkansas. I'm new to off roading and would like to do the Rubicon some day. I've only been in Arkansas for 3 months. I joined an off road driving club to learn how to drive off road from others. There's a good off road park about an hour away and there are lots of trails in the Ozarks and Ouachita mountains. I figure in the next couple years before I move back to CA or where ever I can develop my off road driving, recovery and mechanical skills as well as add sliders and skids etc. Maybe then I'll be more ready. At this point I have a long way to go.

Right on! There's no rush, enjoy the journey. I've come to enjoy the mild trails just as much as the hardcore trails.

Yeah, that's about what I'm thinking. I'd rather learn slowly through other peoples experience than quickly break stuff, hurt myself through my own experience.
