    Hey All,

Some a**hat got in to my truck and made a mess without accomplishing much.

Drilled into and mangled the ignition assembly.

Just wondering if anybody had some advice on parts needed to get it all good again or any info I should know before drilling out the security bolts and replacing the housing.

They also messed up my passenger side lock cylinder. Is it easy enough to replace that and get it all keyed the same?

    Thanks!

    -J

The security bolts are not that big of a thing except for availability, I have always had to order them. Depending on tools, talent and access, 99% of the time a few well placed strikes with a SHARP chisel will loosen one enough to spin it out, once one is loose, the other loosens up easily. You might have to replace the whole housing. There are aftermarket housing that “work” but there is nothing like a factory part. The same thing for the lock cylinder, many aftermarket lock cylinders cant be rekeyed, now you have 2 different keys. No problem you say… that is until the truck gets borrowed and the person not familiar with the truck breaks off the wrong key in the door or worse, the gas cap door.

    Thanks for the reply

I have to get a new housing assembly since a lock cylinder will no longer go in with what they've done to it. So, I got an oem one off ebay that luckily includes door locks keyed the same.

Though it doesn't have all the pretty plastic bits and bobs...

Replacing the passenger door lock cylinder without being able to insert a key may prove a problem

You'll have to watch a few videos on line for door cylinder remove/replace
tacos and 4 runners are pretty much same...

Same on the ignition.......you'll probably have to drill from the front to get that switch out of that ignition tree attached to the column...

Have to go find vids to do that......no shortage of 1s gen vids out there....

You might even go buy a lottery ticket and roll on that stellar good luck..

Only thing I could think of.....is that was some dumb punk kid that tried to do that...

for me with my backup toyota switch I keep in glovebox.....
I could of got in it in 30sec...

Stick one in my driveway.....and bam ....I'll make it mine

If you want to stick with oem cylinders...you cant buy the whole kit..

You'd have to buy the door cylinder twin set...and then go buy the oem ignition cylinder...

and then take all to a lock smith.....and then they repin the ignition cylinder to match your door cylinder...

that's what they do for apartments and businesses everyday....

Last time you were able to get a toyota oem whole matching set ...they were about $450..
and last I checked couple years ago ....everybody was out of stock at all the US car dealerships online sales....
    I assume they're discontinued.

IF you do a search thru the past history of these forums.....you;ll find find a lot with those having to get this apart....

And the door lock is a piece of cake to switch when you pull the handle out....

whats usally a problem is hooking up the linkages using those plastic clips inside the door...
I have to get a mulit pack of those .....'dorman' from Oriely's when did mine...

    Hey, thanks for the info!

Unfortunately, from what i can see, there's no lock cylinder coming in or out of the column tree anytime soon. So, it needs replacing.

I found it used on ebay with OEM ignition and door lock cylinders all keyed the same. So hopefully replacing it all is feasible.

I dont think its damaged beyond .....its just a little beat up

again you've got to get that pin to retract......to slide it out..

To pull that tree off the column is gonna to be a lot of tedious work...

And I've been eyeing that exact tree......I've thought about securing an extra...

for us planning on the million mile mark.....things like that will eventually wear out....fall to pieces...
and send me on a savage hunt.......

same with that shift safety solenoid on the column.....I got a brandnew backup one of those...
    ......a lady in waiting...

I've already replaced the key part of the ignition on mine couple years ago .....after 150K ...those can fail, imprison your key....
and then the only way to shut the truck off is pull the battery cable...
then have to carefully drill that out....to get the old one to release...

If you get a used tree....I'd pull the old key part out....and replace it with a brand spanking new one...

we've seen that here several dozen times...hence the drill videos...

Unfortunatly I didnt do the electrical part of ignition at the same time......and that left me stranded couple cities away a year ago....

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sDPu3U-E-a0

From my youtube war stories channel...

definitely a good reason not to use graphite or any lube in that ignition...
