Help!! I just wanted to get some input before going to the mechanic.

Lately when I shut my truck off the key won't turn over all the way to the left and it won't come out. I always back my truck into my garage (because I have my bicycles hanging up), and it happens 8 out of 10 times when I reverse then put it into park. It happens 1 out of 10 times when I come to a stop after being in drive.

Is this an ignition issue or a transmission issue ?

    Sounds like shifter issues.

Automatic? Comes out when battery is disconnected? Shifter bushings need replacement.

I have the exact same problem on my 2000 PreRunner. Took the console/shifter plastic cupholders and shroud around the shifter apart and found one of the plastic bodied switches down around the shifter linkage has a piece shaped like a hook sticking up from it, and if I pull it up, the key will turn all the way off and I can remove it. I have no clue what that switch or part is called, and haven't tried to buy another one yet, but if I had one in my hand, I'm pretty sure I could change it. Or, for some reason something is not engaging that hook shaped piece of plastic when I put the shifter in Park. I drive it like that now, but I have two vehicles, and am retired and drive very little. My truck has 131,000 miles on it, low mileage for a 2000, and is an automatic. Does anyone know what the part is that I need to fix this? The key will not turn all the way off. It will turn off the engine, but the key won't turn any further, and the battery stuff stays on. I have not tried to see if the it will turn all the way to off with the battery disconnected, as KDF suggests. My next step. Thank you.
