Hello, I just inherited a 2009 Toyota Tacoma TRD5 speed standard truck. Sometimes when I start it, I need to put my foot on the break very hard then the clutch then crank it and it’ll start sometimes it won’t start at all for several tries and I’ll take the key out. Go through the whole thing over again put my foot on the break then the clutch then put the key in and turn it and sometimes it starts. Do I need a new ignition or ignition coil or does anyone have some other ideas? Thank you very much

Not sure what the brake is needed for in the start sequence on a manual, since it's not push to start....

I think the clutch has an interlock switch that has to be active to prevent starting in gear. Maybe that is out of adjustment or the pad on the clutch arm dertiorated so it doesn't engage well.

Or the truck may just need a tune up.

When it doesn't start can you hear the engine cranking? Or is it silent?

    None... yet
On a manual you only have to push in the clutch. It is switch activated.
Is your Tacoma a 4 cylinder with a 5 speed or a 6 cylinder with the 6 speed?
    Maybe check the switch first.

it is a four-cylinder with a five speed. I tried all kinds of things, but then I found this, and I’m leaving the picture here. Now when I just put the key in the ignition and turn the accessory on and push this button and it starts right up! So somehow this just bypasses it. Thank you all for your help, but I think this is going to be all I need

Sounds like you need a clutch safety switch

    That button bypasses it

Or it may just simply need to be adjusted.
