I found a donor that had and an ignition ring light, and my same year (and same month) PreRunner has the same plug under the dash. When I plug it in, I can't figure out when or how it's supposed to light up. I stuck a fresh bulb in, and no combination of the dome light switch, door, and stalk switch seems to trigger it.

Any threads that mention the built-in harness (versus making one from scratch) seem to indicate it "just works".

Is there a certain condition that turns it on, or is there a component I'm missing to use the stock harness for this ignition ring?

When I open either door on my 1999 the light ring will illuminate for a certain period of time, I believe around 15 seconds.

You probably need to swap out the integration relay. For my 99, there are 3 different ones. The truck is bare bones, manual windows and locks, single dome light, plain rear view mirror (not the one w/ a single or double map light). The truck came w/ relay 82641-04011. I plugged in the light ring expecting it to automagically light up and it didn't. After some research, found out it could be because of the integration relay. looked for a couple months in the junk yard to snag one but we rarely ever get Tacomas in yards near be so I gambled and spent like $50 or $60 on ebay in hopes it would work and BOOM, it lit right up after I swapped them!

I swapped mine out with 82641-04021 (map lamp). I don't have power windows so I didn't need to get that one but my guess is that relay should light up the light ring as well.

FYI, mine is a 5 lug but I don't think that matters.

Thanks for the detailed info, that was exactly it!

I pulled 82641-04030 from the donor and it worked. I do have an extra plug on that relay module now. The donor had that squarish plug filled, with the long one empty, while my PreRunner had the long one filled and NO second plug. Seems to work though, so that works.

    Thanks again!

Deltakatsu, what year is your truck? Mine's a 2000 and I'm not sure if I have that harness plug or not.

1998 PreRunner. The plug was wrapped around the wiring under the steering column and tucked away. It also had the wiring for the glove box light and clock (none of which came with the PreRunner).
