Which is what? I disagree with the narrative are any of your talking points based on practice or action? Or ideas and speculations? That's the definition of practical.

I don't know where you gathered your talking points. I can't review them to see where they came from to prove they are practical or not. That's the burden of pro EV.

I can agree with some of them in theory, I haven't seen them in practice. Words have meanings.

How that translates into being anti EV is beyond me. There are things I like about EV, many more things I don't but it's mostly how they are marketed and little nuances. I don't believe they are more practical than an ICE vehicle today. Keep on trolling buddy.

Now if you said you were in a position to promote EV for financial gain. I can completely accept that as a practical reason to be for EV.

Bingo... heavy wet snow with muddy terrain underneath is a nightmare. But concrete or frozen dirt road covered in 20 inches of powder is no issue.
Quality skinny winter tires help a lot imo

My buddy has a full size Chevy 3500 1 Ton, pretty much new, always has had full size pickups. He also has a new Hyundai Kona EV. He drives the Kona all the time, loves it for his commute. His was pretty much the base model for the Kona so it didn't cost to much.

I like the IONIQ 5, probably a touch more pricier than a Kona. I don't really need a comuter vehicle, but I can see the practicality in it. Even more so for somone driving a truck of that size.

Yeah but just owning a regular Corolla is more practical than owning a 1ton and an EV commuter.

Like I always say I don't thing there's anything wrong with EV and they can serve a purpose. I'd drive a Tesla S. You can embrace technology while being skeptical of it at the same time. I don't like the automation and AI found in EV, yes it's impressive technology it's just not for me.

No, the humor is not lost on me.

While that is a definite disadvantage to an EV, I can say from experience that mine is better than any of my old Tacomas in nearly every way. Absolutely not perfect for everything but neither is a Tacoma.

I would have to check on statistics here in AZ to be sure, but some states have a big dam nearby to supply much of the electricity.

But I also know about the unclean skies of the section of the Ohio River on the east border of Ohio. Exhaust stacks of the coal-powered plants are high to attempt to keep the surrounding small cities (villages?) nicer, but the image of the exhaust smoke still are clear in my mind.

perhaps federal infrastructure money to transition away from coal fired electricity is in order

I have driven cross-country a few times. And I have lived in Indiana, Ohio, Washington state, North Carolina and AZ. Not to say you no diversity in living, but that sets up my observations.

Winter in midwest can easily pile feet of snow/ice on solar panels. And wind turbines do not seems a good mass-solution either. The most wind turbines I saw in Ohio were isolated ones serving individual businesses. And other reasons (read my notes about Oklahoma).

North Carolina has milder winters, but trees everywhere (see my notes about Oklahoma). Not sure solar will be best mass solution.

Oklahoma ... I saw tens of square miles of wind turbines ... literally forests of them. But on the open plains, with the wind NOT interrupted leading up to the towers by trees. New Mexico had some (but not forests), northern AZ has far fewer. Wind turbines unless someone tells me otherwise are not universally applicable.

Solar is good in AZ, and New Mexico probably reasonable and Texas, but both of those states have been cloudy/overcast/cold/battered all winter ... rather like northern and eastern elevation Arizona.

Nuclear plants are not the most popular solution.

California desperately relied on solar panels but invested 95% of tis budget in the panels and 5% in storage batteries. A couple of summers ago they had rolling blackouts (multiple-day events are definitely blackouts) because the "making power right now" system was woefully inadequate for the summer power demands.

    SOOOOOO ...

What do you suggest they redirect "critical infrastructure funds" from for the fusion reactors that are NOT weather-dependent? 20GB internet to every household? LED bulbs forced on everybody to replace incandescent?

There are no easy answers, there is obviously a problem unless you have your head buried in the sand. We have a deactivated nuclear reactor on the banks of Lake Michigan. It was built in the late 50’s, all of the nuclear waste it has created is stored on site. That is not going to be easy or cheap to deal with. The complete site is built on sand dunes, god forbid if it was to leak into Lake Michigan.

I love these comments. We get more power from renewables, or nuclear, but that doesn't fit the narrative.

The irony is folks will claim it's wrong to get rid of coal because "it's not that bad", but as soon as it's convenient they use how bad it is as an excuse against EVs.

That or it shows complete ignorance on the very fundamental components of the discussion

I live in South West Michigan, we have all four seasons. Wife has a coworker who converted their 100 year old farm house to wind/solar. They did this about three years ago, cost was around 60K. They are still connected to the grid and use as a backup. The setup has a life expectancy of about 25 years, and haven’t had a utility bill in 3 years. There was some government subsidies to lessen the cost. The government/taxpayers in our country have paid for roads, bridges, tunnels, seaports since the beginning.

Typical response from someone under the impression that the only reason to buy an EV is to save the world from evil emissions. It definitely couldn’t be because it outperforms a conventional internal combustion powered vehicle and is just a better driving experience. I really don’t care about emissions, my last truck was the worst polluting truck sold in the US.

Then there’s the little problem with that picture that an EV powered solely by coal fired power plants is actually creating fewer overall lifetime emissions than a comparable ICE car.

I read somewhere about a person buying a EV to save the planet and trees etc etc. Well his EV was parked in his driveway and guess what during a storm a tree fell and destroyed his EV .So much for saving trees :sawzall:
