I gotta go along with everyone else here. You're 16, got your whole life ahead of you. Be patient, you can't have everything at once. Be glad you have a vehicle at all. Lots of 16 year old high school students don't. Be glad your parents don't spoil you by buying you material things you don't really need. They'll mean that much more to you when you can buy them on your own.

Like others said appreciate what you have. I'm 29 and still to this point I have not been able to afford the 4x4 I want, but I love my Prerunner. Besides if you are broke like myself, we can't afford to pay for the stuff we break offroading anyway. Rather have 2wd than 0wd. Just be glad its not a Ranger

It's funny...but... when you get your first car, it should always be a cheap piece of crap. Your friends will help destroy it and you always end up with a first-time accident in it.

This girl I knew pulled into a parking space and her front bumper hit & scraped the entire drivers side from tire to tire. Then you have fat friends who sit on the hood and the hood never bounces back. And of course, fender benders that are never your fault.

You have a dependable truck that will get you wherever you NEED to go for many years. Keep working. Keep your truck. Save and invest the money you don't spend on a new truck you don't need. By learning to not be wasteful while you're young and with what you start putting away now, 50 years from now you won't have to depend on socialized medicine or have to eat cat food to survive in your golden years.

Hey OFFROADCARWASH I feel your pain. Growing up all my friends had brand new ATV's and dirt bikes. I didn't have shit. My dad just didn't have the cash flow to buy me one. I didn't own my first car until I was 18 when most of my friends had them at 16. I had to take chicks out in a rusted up 2wd Ford truck. Then I phucked up and got married young at 20. I finally did get that ATV I always wanted, I bought it for myself for my 40th birthday. Things in life take time (and money), your eventually get what you want.

I know one thng for sure-at your age, what your peers have as opposed to what you have is EVERYTHING-and it is sad too! Forgive the "starving people in Africa" mantra here, but you are VERY lucky to have a good running vehicle that keeps you nice and dry in the rain and goes a hellova lot faster than your legs! A ton of folks can't even afford a car. I didnt get my first car till I was 19-why? Hadda buy it myself. How about families who have to share one crappy plain car amongst 4-5 people-see what I am saying? I am 47 and I have a 2001 truck. I don't care that my neighbor just bought a 2009 because I love MINE so much and take such good care of it, that it looks just as cool in its own way. Isn't there something redeeming about your truck that can change your perspective?
I just nosed in at your pics-your truck is COOL! A young man at your age with a truck like that is totally respectable IMO. You should be proud!

You sound pretty lucky to me. Some people in college don't even have cars. You've got one of the best trucks ever made and you just got your license. Enjoy the fuel mileage and the fact that your truck will last you until you are graduated from college and can buy a shiny, new 4X4. Oh, and get a degree that will get you a job that will afford you that new Tacoma. I recommend engineering - so easy to get hired right now and in the coming years. But you will have to work for it which it sounds like you can do. Good luck.

I thought I was spoiled. My parents gave me a 5 year old Saturn sedan when I was 17. The engine blew up and it was replaced by a 12 year old Crown Vic.

    Patience is a b*tch aint it? :)

I know it doesn't sound like it when all your friends have nice vehicles but you are lucky to even have a car. I didn't get my first vehicle until I was about 21 (I bought a motorcycle). I drove that for a couple years before buying a car (25 years old).

Unfortunately, without money, you're just stuck. Save up and look where your money is going now. When you buy something (snacks, lunches, clothes, stereo, etc) ask yourself, "Would I rather have this or a 4x4?" Brownbag your lunch instead of buying it. Cut down on consumable expenses; those where you have nothing to show for it once you've used it (e.g. gas). Look at your transportation costs. Look for opportunities where it would save you money to walk somewhere or ride a bike instead of driving (gas costs money that could go toward your 4x4). See if you have some stuff you can sell on eBay. Do you have a part-time job?

Remember too that with a new truck comes higher insurance payments, especially at your age. Insurance drops quite a bit once you reach 25.

my chevro-legs and BMX got me around til i was 20, then i bought a 1974 dodge dart for $200. Awesome car but i put about 453245235254 hours of work into it! I was in the same position, until I got a good paying job and now i own my 4x4 double cab. It was worth the wait

This guy's got the idea! I know it sounds like you'll "nickel and dime" yourself into oblivion-but this stuff WORKS! It does add up quick...you have to commit to discipline. The rewards are awsome PLUS you become a money manager!
By the way the "walk somewhere or ride a bike" thing is great because it makes you realize what a wonderful thing that truck really is:)

just be happy with what you have. you're 16, you're suppose to be driving around a pos but you lucked out and have a nice truck. when i was 16 i had to drive my dads dookie brown ford F100 with no ac and it was 2wd. just be glad you have a nice truck. just keep saving and get one when you can afford it, thats your only option. i'm like you, i had to pay for my car when i got one out of high school. i drove it in SC summers for 7 years with no AC before i got my truck. just pay your dues and buy something badass when you can afford it

    amen!

I'll go with what others have said - be grateful for what you've got, there's a whole load of people that haven't got what you have. Don't aspire to be the same as your friends - falling into that trap will cost you a lot of money. Just look how many people 'own' homes that they can't afford, thinking they're entitiled to them cos all their friends have them.

You should be satisfied that you have the most economical vehicle. You may not turn heads when you drive down the road, but you can sleep soundly knowing that you earned it.

I was in your situation when i was your age. You're gonna have to make a decision, keep the truck you have, with 2wd, or sell it for as much as you can and buy the best older 4x4 Tacoma that you can with the money you get. Your 2000 is the same basic body style all the way back to 94 you could probably get a late 90's like 98 or so in 4x4 for what you could sell your truck for. If you are patient and look you may find an older truck in such good condition there is effectively no difference.

Sorry to be blunt, buts this is life. If you're jealous of your friends, work your ass off. Thats what I did. Show your parents you deserve something nice and maybe they'll cut you a deal.
