My bad. I accidentally scrolled over Mod's truck's info and saw it was a 98 5-speed

Mine still started up after but i have poor idle. When i turn on the A/C the truck feels like its going to die out. After replacing all the blown fuses, the idle got better and the truck was driveable. It seems like u might need to replace the sensors as some of them run on 5v and if you grounded it out to chassis that would send 12v to the sensors and possibly causing them to fry, hence the starting problems because sensor readings aren't accurate. Im pretty sure by 2004(year of your truck) Toyota would have found out a way to protect their ECU's from grounding and reverse polarity problems like these, so i would test the sensors or find a similar truck to test swap sensors from and see if there is a change before actually getting a new ECU. Good Luck...

You most likely sent the screw through the +5 volt reference wire it shorted it to ground there is no protection for that. The sensors more than likely are fine it should have had no effect on them. All of your codes are basically telling you you have low voltage at the sensors. The sensors output a voltage between 0 and 5 volts there is no 12 volt presence.

Before getting a new ECU, double check the wiring to insure a good contact. I would solder them and cover with heat shrink. Also check for other damaged wires to insure nothing is grounding out.

If the ECU was blown, it would be totally blown. This sounds like a bad connection to me :notsure:.

Took it to the dealer to confirm. They didn't think it was the computer at first because it passed the self diagnostic, but in the end it was the computer. New one is on the way... $150 for the computer and another $315 in labor from the dealer to confirm what i already told them... but they're flashing it for "free"...

Why are they flashing it? I have bought two used ECU's and never had them flashed. 1 when I went auto to manual, then the current ecu for my v8....

First gen ECU's are not flashable.
They sure are giving you a great deal on the flash!

That's why its free :D. Id say no thanks and do it yourself. Very easy to do (just need to be mounted and plugged in).

That said, I still doubt there was anything wrong with your original ECU... I wont be surprised if a new one doesn't work... :notsure:

They put a new ecu from a truck they had on the lot in it and it ran fine... so it's defiantly the ECU. and i did several google searches and they all said you have to program the new computer with your vin number... but i'm not convinced.

Your truck is an 04 so maybe... I thought that was not started till 05 and it was a one time deal, no reflash.

No one scrolls over me and gets away with it. :duel:

Good news on the ECU. Didn't think all those sensors could get nuked. ECU must have a interrupt circuit internally. I think that's crap on the reflash. You plug it in, and it learns what it needs. It reflashes itself in a way when powered up and initiated to run. If you can find a U-pull-it junkyard locally,,you might compare prices,, Because, the borrowed ECU from the lot had your truck running fine,,as you posted.

All they are flashing for free, is adding the VIN to the board, as most dealers are required to do when they R&R a ECU.

Oh ok. Weird. You must have cut the "Constant 12V" feed wire and grounded it on something. Unless your truck was running when you did it, all other wires should be dead :notsure:

Glad to hear its worked out but still think you should tell them to take a hike and install your ECU yourself. Very very simple job.

$370 in the end, plus $150 for the computer. They were taking forever so I ended up putting it in myself and the technician stood there and watched, and then they took another hour to "flash" the computer... I'm not very impressed with how it went. I work nights right now too, so when i got the package at 11am i went straight to the dealership... i wasn't back in bed until 4:00pm. not good for the night shift i'm currently working. And when i put the computer in the truck started right up. they said it's better to flash it with your vin, but not completely necessary. Basically I paid them $370 to tell me when i already knew, and then program my computer with secret numbers that make her run real good like! But at least it's all together now.

Good to know you were able to get it fixed. A bit spendy but it could have been alot worse considering what happened.

If a dealership quote's 2 hrs work,,add on 2 more to that just for incidentals. It's a pretty good rule of thumb.

I think your user name sounds appropriate for the dealership, good on you for getting it done tho'....;)
