    I grew up in the import scene, I even had the Honda "H" tattoo'd on my body. This is my first truck that I didn't slam and put air bags on. So to me, I have to learn what is good and what isn't good for Tacoma's.. Maybe we can swap the knowledge?

    Haha welcome to the dark side then, this is seriously addicting!!! I build offroad race cars for about 8 years prior to the Air Force so I get really into it. My budget never matches my asperations... But I have got to work on and drive some really cool shit that I would have never been able to afford, so it is all good. Plus, this civic helps free up cash for Truck projects... when it's running good.

    My next project is a 1st Gen 4Runner witch will be a long travel and expo hybrid... gunna go way off the deep end with that one... But yes, please feel free to PM me any questions you got!! I know a ton about fab work, suspension set ups, and anything in that arena.

    I also want a 1st gen 4 runner, same setup. I don't want to do anything to my 2011 Tacoma, I saved for years to get this truck and it better last me as long as I saved up to get it. (Stated saving in 2005 for it).

    No. The sohc vtec zc motor is a direct swap.

    Thats a good resourse for motors, I think 818 is in driving distance for me as well....

    By franken motor, I mean that because it's from Japan, I can't just walk into the autopart store and say "it's a 95 civic." That site you sent me had a list of models for specific parts, water pump you need to say this car, distributer you need to say this car. It seems like Honda took parts from a bunch of different models and put that motor together... or vise versa.

    I realized that after. They were talking about the dohc zc. Lol. Franken motors aren't bad. I have a frank k24, kpro, and wire harness waiting for a good shell.

    Oh I totally get it. If I was building a high performance car it would be zero issue for me, because you know what you are getting into. But I am trying to keep this more of a simple commuter car, something I can get parts from the local store for easily. I do want to maybe do some aftermarket add-ons, things that are good for a few HP here and there, maybe help with my MPG... I honestly don't think my shell is something to put all that money and work into, it's rather worn and well used... Shit other than the shell, most of the other body panels have been removed and replaced, the wiring is rather botch from a previous alarm that has been halfway removed (I have to rub two wires together to turn the alarm off), and the suspension really needs to be fixed (bushings, balljoints, axels)...

    Another thumbs up for Exedy clutches.

    Built a few Hondas myself. First swap (91 B18A1 into 90 Civic Si hatch) was done before mounts were readily available. Also did a fully built 95 B18C1 into a 93 Integra LS.

    To me a ZC is a DOHC non-Vtec that came in 1st gen Integras.

    I agree that if you refer to the ZC its the DOHC non-vtec motor. At least that's what was most common reference back in the day.

    I figured the zc was dohc to most. That's why I said sohc zc. It's a straight swap into an EJ.

    Here's a question, anything else problematic you guys recommend to replace while I got the engine and trans out? Of course belts and hoses, maybe thermestat. What else, anything civic specific that I might want to do while I am at it?

    There's some real knowledge in this thread. I have an 05 civic, 2 door, 1.7, auto. All I have is aftermarket wheels on it. I dont set aside any mod money for it, because its quiet, rides good and gets awesome mileage, so I figured I would leave well enough alone. But if I can tweak a few things, I'm not against it. The only thing I dont really like about it, is its 0-60 time. I dont like breaking out my sundial to time it...:eek: Any cheap/free or must have mods for those?

    Clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing, release baring, water pump, timing belt, any gaskets you see that are dried out. If its a rebuild you shouldn't have to worry about any of this other than the clutch assembly.


    Basic bolt-on's will help out a bit but you won't find any major HP increases until you build up the motor or start a boosting it.

    Lets see, I am doing a clutch kit so that should cover clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and release bearing. I will obviously have the preasure plate re-surfaced or replaced it needed. Looking on the Napa site, looks like I can get a new water pump with a timing belt kit for $100 so I might really consider that! Then ya, any leaks of course. I just put new plugs, wires, and distributer on my existing engine, so I will swap those over...

    Cheap/free mods. Not much you can do unless you start gutting which isn't much on an EM.

    If you wanna go faster. You can boost that 1.7 or your best option is to drop a K motor.

    The clutch kit will come with pressure plate, flywheel, clutch.. you'll have to get the release/throw out bearings from Napa or an auto parts store.

    We just did the clutch in my wife's civic last week. She got 120k miles on her stock clutch. Leaned to drive on that clutch too!
