Funny - I drove by an accident on the interstate yesterday and a sedan was upside down in the middle of the lane (not in the median) resting balanced on the hood and roof and it looked like it had been laid there gently, no crushing of the roof structure at all. I assume it was going 60+ when it flipped, and I assume everyone walked away. Reminded me how safe cars are these days.

Yes, the small overlap test is new and many vehicles struggle with it. That is a single type of collision though and replications of the test with real vehicles and not concrete has shown that often the cars are thrown away from each other in such a collision because the vector of the energy is not in line with the centre of either vehicle. That being said OP is looking for advice on keeping his family the safest possible. Removing crumple zones increeases the risk of severe injury in most high energy collisions.

Like I said, as an emergency responder if you don't believe me. A couple of volunteer firefighters work for us and they all have stories of old solid steel trucks and cars that rolled in the ditch or hit something solid and everyone inside was dead from a snaped neck even though the vehicle was in drivable shape.

    ^ this.

The more rigid the truck becomes, the more violent energy is transferred to your body in a crash.

Thanks for all the insight from everybody I personally was nieve enough to think that the bumpers would protect my family more rather than hurt them more in an accident I know I am for sure getting sliders and skids I might get a rear bumper for my tire rack bu don't think I'll be putting on a front bumper if so might just weld some cheap tubing and sheet metal to the front for a light bar that would fold if a crash ever took place
