It's not so easy to stay/avoid a lot of places. Basically once you leave Edmonton you have to rely on the little places that rely on the oilfield money. As for jeverich, I'm looking at the ugly bastard now haha.

With the military paying for lodging and gas I wouldn't be too worried about it but be mindful that roads may be closed and services unavailable for most of the actual ALCAN which starts in Dawson's Creek which between there and Whitehorse are beautiful and worth a stop

I'm super excited for it. I'll have my GoPro mounted somewhere on the truck and my good point and click with me. When I get up there and settled in, I plan to do a thread outlining the adventure like mipawlus did.

I just looked over your adventure thread. You've seen a lot of cool stuff and I'm going to take a few detours as I pass buy some of the places you did!

Road closures are the biggest thing I'm worried about on the ALCAN well, anywhere in Canada too really. But I have a milepost and most people say the roads will only be closed about a day so the plows can clear them.

I do plan on having a few jerry cans/food/emergency supplies/and cold weather clothing/gear with me. Thankfully it's easy to get MREs in Korea because I'm going to mail them home for the trip :D

I dip into my USMC reserves/gear for adventures like this. Also look at a few regional threads here. I'm assuming you're either army or navy given the Korea and leaning toward the army. You gonna be in anchorage?

Yeah, I'm digging up some of my Afghanistan gear for the trip as well. I'm actually Air Force and I'll be stationed at JBER in Anchorage.

It's not bad, but Osan has more to offer. I've gone up there a few times and had a blast. Itaewon is also one of my favorite places to visit.

I've been lurking on the Alaska section for about a couple of weeks now. I guess now that it's official that I'm going up there I should introduce myself haha.

Ohhh Iowa, I do like it there. I was stationed at Offutt in Omaha for 7 years before going to Korea. I got to explore a fair amount of Iowa. I have often considered going back to Omaha after I retire from the Air Force.

My family and I went the other direction in '93. Ft Wainwright to Ft Gordon (thought we went down to Key West to drop my sister off with my grandparents first). I volunteered for Korea when I was still in. They said no then tried to get me to re-enlist, told them to get me an Antarctic winter tour and I would. Didn't stay in. Anyways. Take a drive through the redwoods.

For a mid-british columbia stop, Barkerville is pretty cool and definitely worth it. Nice provincial park campsites there too.

When I drove back home to Anchorage I stopped at some really cool hot springs in the middle of Canada not far off the highway. I cant remember what they were called though. Pretty sure they were near the north border of British Columbia. You should look them up and check them out.

I'll look it up and add it to the itinerary, I'm down for any stops in BC since it will be on the way. Thanks!

I was browsing through the Milepost the other day and I read about some hot springs. I think it may have been the ones you mention. I'll check and see, but it's also depends on if they will be open in January.

That's probably the Liard River Hot Springs in northern BC (https://goo.gl/maps/t9qw2).

It's a Provincial Park, which will be closed in the winter, but you can still drive into the parking lot. From there, it's a short walk to the hot springs. Definitely worth a stop.

The hotel which is just across the highway from the hot springs would not allow my dog inside when I was there, so check with them if you plan on staying overnight. A lot of people just stop for a quick dip and hit the road for Watson Lake (Yukon) a couple of hours further North.

Hell. Liard is in Northwest territories. That's a good 4 hour drive north on the alcan. I drove drove to the NWT border just to say I'd been there and still had an hour to ft Simpson.

Avoid the dragons den in Watson lake. It's like a bad porn set.
