The only thing keeping it from being a total is being brand new with no miles . It would probably be easier to find another than wait 3 months . Tell the shop you want it to total and look it over realy well for damage . Hell tell them it will be reinspected afterwards . It'll go away.

Glad you are ok. Looks like the truck took care of you. I imagine it will be totaled. I have pushed the limits of driving tired, too. Drove from the FL keys to Baltimore in one shot, about 18 hours. I was an hour from home and realized I was going to die on 95 if I didn't pull over and sleep. Best decision I ever made. Good luck with your Taco.

    Dang!

I drove from JAX, FL to Dover, DE and spent the night in Florence, SC. I wasn't in a hurry to drive the roughly 800 miles...plus, I got to sleep in a nice bed! Best $120 I spent! WooHoo!

As for OP, I will tell you that would scare the living daylights out of me...driving so tired and then falling asleep at the wheel.

I'd be thinking about what could have happened as opposed to: "whew!, thank God I survived".

Glad you're OK but next time, make a better decision.

The Stats: Drowsy Driving vs. Drunk Driving
According to reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA3), drowsy driving was responsible for at least 91,000 car crashes, 50,000 injuries, and 795 deaths in 2017. These figures are fairly consistent year-on-year. By contrast, alcohol was thought to be involved in 9,949 fatal crashes4 in 2017, comprising almost 30% of all fatal crashes.

Alcohol impairment is fairly easy to measure using blood alcohol measurements, but sleep deprivation is tougher to define, especially after the fact. As most people are reluctant to admit they were driving while sleepy, experts believe that drowsy driving accidents are often mistakenly attributed to other factors.

Based on careful analysis, experts believe the real number of annual fatalities due to drowsy driving in the U.S. may be closer to 6,000. This would mean drowsiness is involved in approximately 21% of fatal crashes5 every year. Between hospital admissions, property damage, and other costs, the estimated societal cost of drowsy driving in the U.S. may be anywhere between $12.5 billion and $109 billion per year6.

Driving drowsy is bad, OP survived. I hope it was a lesson learned. Let us all be a little more responsible for our actions and judgements.

Sad to hear. It would love to hear what the insurance payout was compared to what you just spent? When my truck was totaled not only did I get the value of the truck, but they also covered taxes and tags. Not sure if they always do that or if it is a state thing, but you pay insurance for a reason, you should get the maximum value.

He wasn't asking for advice... he was asking about his truck totaled or not.

Nothing you can do about accidents from tired drivers, blackouts, health issues, etc.

    Accidents can happen anytime..

OP, glad you are okay. Hope you get something good out of it.

Hope you didn't finance so much of the truck that you need GAP insurance.

Doubt OP needed much of it, if any. These things barely lose any kind of value driving off the lot. Yes that includes taxes and fees.

Mine is still worth what I paid for it, taxes fees and warranty included 3 years later.

They do hold their value, but who would give you that much for it?

    Insurance co?

    Carvana?

Lose value? They are worth more used right now. That should be factored into the settlement.

Now that I think about how does this work? Everyone is under insured when they drive off the lot?

Finance the whole thing, trade before it's paid off, and don't pay over MSRP.

Carvana and Car Max have both quoted me 35k for my truck, about a month ago. I paid 37k OTD taxes, fees, and extended warranty. So yeah not exactly that but considering 3 years use and a possibility to negotiate...

I'm sure insurance would be right around the same area.

Right - that's kindof accounting for taxes and fees, which are typically included in the loan amount but not just "tacked on" to resale.

And yes - that's what gap is for. To cover that value loss from driving it off the lot. If you get into a total loss accident on the way home, you need to cover the value of the loan to the financier.

Most people, though don't finance the whole vehicle. So insurance in these cases will typically cover the whole loan and then some. Admittedly my dad suggested I get gap as I only put 3k down. I blew it off, though knowing how much these vehicles hold their value. At the time, a 2 year used vehicle was going for only 3k less than new. So I figured gap wasn't necessary. Plus I had the funds to cover the gap if needed.

Was your wife's Tacoma less damaged than mine after it got hit by a metal pipe?

Sadly, I think it's totaled; If it were just the front end damage with no airbag deployment, or airbag deployment with lesser damage, I would say they might fix it...
