Maybe, but that genie ain't going back in the bottle.

Bottom line we are all living in a "golden age", but drowning in a sea of choices/ decisions about all the useless things we "want" at the same time, imo.

There are still plenty of places to move to for anyone not happy with all the modern conveniences, but there will always be reasons not to.

Interesting this is a thread about "overlanding", since that seems like a way people are trying to get back to a more rugged existence.

Last, I was pretty much raised by my 19th century born grandparents who both grew up in NYC slums, never heard either one of them complain about anything modern, just people making poor choices.

    Back to the shenanigans......

You installed a PTO on your Taco? How did you manage that?

That was a great movie, I actually had been doing the gate scene before it came out. Also laughing at my passengers who opened and shut the gate for me as I drove through but they often forget and end up on the wrong side when they close and lock it shut! :)

Well.....this sketch mentions overlanding of a sort. Probably one of the best takes on the modern world I’ve heard. I suppose we are not allowed to like Louis CK anymore, now that we know he was prone to yelling at his staff while pulling his pud, but he had a gift of clarity.

Steve albini is in a thread in Tacoma world. Where am I.

The “Oregon trail” generation is an actual classification, of which I am a part of.

I don't mean to offend but I tried to watch an episode of this yesterday. It's like a bunch of little boys playing in the sandbox with their expensive toys. I have nothing against toys. I have purchased plenty of my own in my lifetime. It’s their money they can do what they want with it and it’s their time they can do what they want with it. But at one point a guy receives word that his wife just had a baby and all his buddies congratulate him. They sit around the campfire that night smoking cigars to congratulate him for becoming a father. WTF, his wife is giving birth and he's playing in the sandbox? Sounds like she’s the one who had the real adventure.
Spend your money how you want, go on your little trips, but don’t try to pretend what you’re doing is of some great significance to mankind. Also, who supports these youngsters as the enjoy playtime? Just saying.

Apparently you just spent thousands and thousands of dollars to take the multi functionality out of a vehicle so that you can use backpacking gear to complain about backpacking gear that you still need to buy. And you’re only real Overlander if it is about buying crap and influencing others to do so too, just remember:

“Going to the mountains is going home” hahaha

How many super chill bros bought a brand new Trd pro after watching videos like these or spent days jerking off to someone's super cool Instagram account.

 go for it I would suggest a lift and better tires than he has.

It's cute to watch this guy is actually making a video and documenting his adventure. Got in to some radical terrain ( ruts) in the dirt parking lot.

I love modern tech. I'm 30 miles from town right now doing my candyass version of camping with a strong cell signal and internet access on a laptop with a smartphone that takes nice pictures so I can brag about the inverter in my EFI truck, my awesome $14k aluminum frame fiberglass body 19' trailer with a queen bed, giant fridge/freezer, my power windows I can roll down when the dog farts in the rear, my awesome LP-powered Yamaha inverter generator.

I graduated high school in 1976. The '70's sucked, it wasn't some golden time, there was about 23% unemployment when I graduated high school, strife and turmoil all over the place. The Vietnam War had just ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon, the USSR was feeling its oats trying to expand, invaded Afghanistan in 1979.

I love new tech, EFI is a great thing, in the '70's there was no such thing, even Mercedes still had Bosch mechanical fuel injection. We had distributors with a coil, rotor, points, had to use a timing light. Carburetors, f them, what a pain. If you want to go back to those days I figure you are nuts. I can't count how many times an engine was misfiring and we'd pull the distributor cap to file down burned points, rotor, and cap points to get a good spark.

Truck inverter in the '70's, '80's? No. Teeny little 2kw inverter generator for $800? Nope.

I do draw a line going all-REI when I can get the same by browsing a thriftstore or a military surplus store. Bottom line is the good old days were not the good old days.
