How do overlanders on instagram get to go camping 300 days a year?

    They don't.

They spend more time taking pics and videos than they do actually camping or wheeling. Also, all the west coast blow hards have their favorite hard packed forest roads within an hour's drive from them.
So they gather a shitload of media and then make it stretch for a week. Or a month.

They also whore themselves out to whoever will send them a free vinyl decal :)

That there is a clean definition. Think you reduced it down to its basic elements. Well done.

I really don’t care how people camp (so long as they’re respectful of the land and don’t trash it up or do stupid shit to disrupt the habitat).

I love the jokes about overlanding, so I get in threads like this one and have fun, BUT ...

Two things bother me about this overlanding scene.

FIRST - Don’t drive your fucking truck through a pristine fishery for the photo op. The trout don’t need your fuel and oil to survive and would rather you not drive over their beds where they are trying to spawn future generations of fish.

SECOND - If you’re “overlanding” so hard, why are the same roads there when I visit? If you’re really overlanding, if you’re a modern day pioneer of sorts, I feel like you should be blazing your own trail. I have literally seen stock subarus on these “epic overlanding trails” the instagrammers are hyping.

I agree with your first point but not your second. Having travelled extensively in North America, I feel there aren’t many new trails to blaze, unless you are going to rip the shit out of what’s left of the environment. There’s trails left to blaze above the arctic circle, but you are going to have to pair up with a bull dozer and a fleet of gravel trucks to get you through the muskeg.

I hope the instagrammers stick to the existing trails and “tread lightly”, so they don’t shut it all down on us, and nature gets a little space for itself.

    Just my opinion.

Happens to all of us.. Though I see what you were trying to get at.

Basically, the idea of “overlanding” in North America, is mostly fake.

At the end of the day, if these trends get more people, and their kids outdoors, I am all for it. I know my posts are all over the place, but I work at a desk all day and sometimes struggle to find time to get myself and my kid outdoors. I hope Instagram really does influence my son's generation to go outside and live.

Here’s an interesting observation that may or may not be related. About a year ago I purchased a new Four Wheel camper Hawk truck camper from an east coast dealer. I live in central PA. I didn’t know shit about Overlanding. I just wanted something light I could put on the back of my Ram cause I’m not so good at backing up trailers anymore. I quickly realized I had made a mistake and would probably not get to use the rig much. I put it up for sale on as many camping sites ad I could. The crazy thing is I got almost 0 interest from anyone east of the Mississippi (too small too expensive.) On the other hand, I had tons of interest from the West. Inquires as far away as Alska, Montana, British Columbia. Ended up selling it to a guy who drove all the way here from South Dakota to pick it up. There’s a lesson there somewhere.

"Overlanding" to me, is running something like the KAT or DBBB in their entirety with a set goal of time to do so. The goat paths are there, semi-maintained (if you can call it that) *insert @mwc273 nearly flopping down a hillside and us cutting trees out the way*, but plenty of obstacles in the way!

But I still just call it 'camping while wheeling with strangers from the internet'.

Just saw this. Short video, but much better than the typical "overlanding" video. A little sponsorship, but no cheesy narration, the music is tolerable, not one cooking scene, no useless gear pimping, and they were actually filming the trucks on a decent trail.
