Alright boys, I've got a lowered 2010 5 lug regular cab that I'm planning on turning into quite the project; no suspension part left stock/unmodified, boxed frame, custom interior, the works. Just landed a new job at bmw of all places so I'm getting ready to make it happen slowly but surely. My only issue is this damn 2tr with an auto... I want to engine swap it (probably in a few years, this is imaginary as of now) but I can't figure out what would be the best engine for the job. It doesn't have to be a 1000hp monster with a 2J (as cool as that would be) but I definitely want to stay Toyota. So far I've been thinking of simply putting in a 1gr-fe and turbo-ing that MF, or potentially a 1-3uz V8..? Anyone got any cool ideas for a good fit? Or even a thread of someone who's done a v6/V8 swap similar to what I've mentioned. Like I said I'm basically just curious at the moment so it would be cool to get some ideas from other people on here who know their shit better than I do. Just can't get the picture of my little taco screaming around a track out of my head lol. And since I know it's coming, "just sell it and buy a different car/truck" isn't on the table ;)

Got a lot of stuff lol
Lol there's no such thing as imaginary if you want it.

I started with adding a turbo to my 2tr-fe and after I thought I developed a head tick I aquired some extra cylinders with a 1uzfe. After rebuilding the engine I ripped the 4cly out, plated the frame, added mid travel and dropped the motor in.

I'm finishing up all the little things now but it does drive and I have ac.

    Here's the full build

Eventually I'll add a haltech and a m112 blower but for now she rips as is.

Holy shit that's one mean little taco!! How was it fitting the engine in there? Any fabrication or did it more or less bolt right in? A V8 would definitely be the dream but I recently saw a video on YouTube of an x-runner making 800hp so for such a small truck that'd be something I could work with and I'd imagine it would be pretty simple as far as engine swaps go. Considerimg I'd be swapping a 2nd gen Tacoma motor into another 2nd gen Tacoma. I'll definitely do some more research on the uz now, thanks! Also it's only imaginary as of now... One day it's gonna happen just a matter of when >:)

Poke a nice diesel engine in that.

Something like a Peilstick 18PC4-2B. You'll have all the benefits of diesel, high torque at low speed, diesel economy, bragging rights of having the biggest engine......

Might need a frame upgrade, suspension too.

Idk about a diesel for the racetrack... Next build is definitely gonna be lifted instead of lowered

Replacing the rear end definitely isn't out of the question. Although at that point I could even start toying with the idea of an IRS swap hehehe

Just realized I forgot to mention my truck is lowered and my goal is to make a sweet race or even drift build out of it. Edited the original post but looks like there was a little confusion. My bad

Fwiw, I'm building my 2tr into an autocross/street rig. I've got a holset he351w twin scroll for it. Should be good for ~500hp. The 5 speed is the same transmission as the Supra, just with a shorter first gear. I currently run it with the stock drivetrain, lowered roughly four inches all around, on 18x10.5 wheels at my local autocross. I've been running similar times to the naturally aspirated miatas. So it's definitely possible!

There's plenty more I'm doing than just the turbo, but that's the big change. 0B6A4AEB-5578-4255-BA00-CCBE071874D9.jpg

If you're determined to go v8 powah, I'd suggest the 2uz. It's the same engine as the 1uz but with an iron block so it's good for all the boost and heat. It does require swapping 1uz rods into it, as the 2uz got very thin rods not designed to handle boost.

Since you're pulling the engine anyway I say shoot the moon and mid-engine mount the new one just behind the cab. That would make it a riot to hurl around the track.

Y'know what? You're a fucking genius. I could fabricate a cowl that goes into a roof scoop or something, sort of like the Nascar taco that Brad deberti made. I could have a frunk too :D

As usual I love your truck that thing is mean. Ive considered doing something like that but with all that plus a manual swap I'm getting into engine swap cost territory anyways. Plus I was thinking a full swap after college would be a great learning experience since I'm going for a degree in high performance auto engineering and fabrication. What brand are your wheels btw? I've been trying to find another set for actual performance wheels so I could use my interceptor steelies as winter/rally wheels.

If you're going for high performance... Toyota mr2 engine swap. The sky is the limit depending on your budget! The wheels are varrstoen's, which are what came on the truck when I bought it. They're pretty heavy and not what I plan to run for a long time. I'm looking at konig wheels, or maybe even OZ racing wheels. The biggest challenge is the hub bore since our 5 lugs have a very small bore, and most aftermarket are 73+mm. I'm running a small hub centric ring on these to fit them correctly, with no spacer. They're -12 offset as well.

Yeah honestly I think going front engine and just redirecting as many parts to the back as possible would probably be a lot more cost effective . I can dream tho. My wheels have a very slightly larger bore so I had to find some obscure ass rings to fit, they're less than 2 millimeters thick and were a bitch to find. They've given me no issues tho so I wouldnt have a problem running them again tbh. The -12 offset definitely works well on it that's for sure.
