Going to be driving to Massachusetts and back to Virginia and I don't want to get stranded so I ordered one and I'm going to install it while I am installing my lift. Don't want to spend the extra money to do this but I also know I don't want to get stranded so it just seems logical to replace this since its a know high fail item and I purchased my Tacoma in February 2016 so my truck probably has the old version.

Call them and ask the parts guy to ID them and make you're getting what you want. Very likely you will be getting the updated item.
I did that on mine when I ordered my spare for the G box.

How many folks on here replaced the CPS, were not stalling completely, and it actually fixed your problems? I'm getting misfires though I've cleaned my MAF, reset learning, new OEM (paper) filter, etc., and have experienced some cat sulphur smells in the past. Not on the CPS recall list yet, but out of desperation I ordered the new CPS and plan to install this weekend... Just curious if anyone else has had the swap actually improve misfire/lean fuel trim conditions?

There was a article a few weeks ago they are recalling 37000 Tacoma's in July. Said owners will be notified.

Replaced my CPS this morning. Appeared to have the old one, replaced with the latest part number that was made in April '17.

    2017 OR build date 8/16.

Results: smoother idle, less lugging, smoother steering, and initially appears to have increased my MPGs to near the 20 many get with normal combined city/highway driving which I've never gotten unless running E0

Will report back within a few days but my initial assessment it that this was indeed negatively impacting performance. I could also noticed the needle "floating" some and it did it more when it was hot/traffic/AC. Not doing that anymore so we'll see how long this lasts.

    One more box checked...

NOTE: harmonic vibes still present, but with the better steering/pressure it isn't quite as annoying. May do the steering dampener soon to see if I can keep whittling away at vibes

Day 2 update post CPS replacement: Everything just feels "easier" overall. Wearing my work shoes while driving in to the city today, I had to "hover" my foot more on the throttle - to the extent I actually moved my seat back a notch since I didn't have to be in such an "aggressive" position vs. constantly mashing it to get up to speed. Steering continues to feel like someone unclogged it... before, while the power steering was definitely working, it took just a bit more muscle which led to a tighter grip on the steering wheel, which then amplifies the annoyance with the vibes.

Oddly, I AM still recording intermittent misfires in the data even though it seems to be running pretty well. Still sporadic (no specific cylinder(s)) so at this point I'm honestly starting to wonder if they actually designed this to miss perhaps as a by product of the Atkinson but who knows. Does generally seem to be after acceleration so it could indeed still have something to do with fuel pump/injectors/O2 sensors but the result is simply the "common" slight miss feeling occasionally that does not appear to be impacting performance otherwise. Still don't like seeing misfires on nearly every trip, so will continue to monitor...

MPGs on my commute in, which were sitting around 15-16 mpgs last week were at 18.5 this AM. I haven't gotten those MPGs on a city commute unless running Pure Gas which I've stayed away from for some time as I can't always find it from Top Tier and have concluded this engine doesn't respond too well to switching fuel types often.

Hey thanks for the response in the other thread! I looked through the thread the part numbers are only for 2016 OR. I couldn't find a 2017 part number. The dealer website I looked at gave me a warning that the 2016 part was incompatible.

Same. I bought mine from McGeorge Online Toyota parts and sent in my VIN to confirm compatibility.

I just put in the order! Thanks. I am going to start tracking my MPGs on an excel sheet to see what happens.

Buy a carista (or another OBDII adapter) and start tracking fuel trims, lambda, O2 sensors, misfires, etc., if you feel really froggy (along with fuel mileage). I have a theory developing that in designing this engine / ECU, it may be been intentionally running on the edge and using minor misfires to correct itself. Would love more data

I just looked at the location of the sensor, does it have a rubber boot covering the wiring connector? Mine does if I'm looking at the right thing. I am tempted to pull mine and check for the hash symbol. I am not listed for the recall but if it is as easy to change as others said I think it's $100 well spent and also gives you a spare as well.

Yes, pull back the rubber boot to access the clip to disconnect. This was probably the trickiest part that would've been a little easier if wheel had been taken off... but it would have taken me longer and I got it worked out

And I'll re-iterate - I was NOT on the recall list (for anything yet actually). I literally went for a MTB ride after work last night and kept thinking of errands I needed to run on the way home so I could enjoy driving my truck around - almost in disbelief, like "Are you really running this well!?" Complete 180. Vibes? they are a bummer, but damn my truck was driving like a jalopy compared to what it is now. When I first bought my truck I looked FORWARD to driving it each day - like one should when you drop $35k on a new truck.

It's a tricky beast though... so I'm just hoping it sticks. I'm now on day 5 and it only seems to be getting better.

Okay, so here is my pics from checking mine which is a 2017 DC TRD Sport with a build date of 8/16 made in Mexico. I appear to have the hash marks which makes me think I'm good to go. However, I may replace it anyway for peace of mind AND to have a spare in case it fails as it is EASY to change.

1). Jack up and remove passenger side wheel. This makes access to the part SO MUCH easier as it is kind of far up in there. Also remove the rubber flap cover with a panel tool. I only removed the two top pins and let it hang.

    IMG_0089.jpg

2). Locate the CPS sensor which has a protective boot over the electrical socket. (This fooled me first as it's hard to tell it's a boot vs. a sealed part. It's a boot!)

    IMG_0085.jpg

3). Removed the 10mm bolt and carefully pull the CPS sensor out without damaging the O ring that seals it.

    IMG_0087.jpg

4). Carefully inspect the part for the said hash mark shown below on mine OR reverse the process at this point to replace the CPS sensor. (Recommended to lightly coat the O-ring with a little motor oil to ease installation)

    IMG_0088.jpg

5). Torque the 10mm bolt to 7ft-lbs, reconnect electrical connector and re-install the rubber cover. And you're done!

Good write-up with pics which I was too rushed to do ;) Mine was the same build month as yours from Baja and mine didn't have the hash marks and had a diff part number on the new vs. the old. Those numbers were tiny though and I didn't bother w/ pics :(

Just in case, I have the old one in my toolbox so in the event this ever causes me a problem I at least have a mostly functioning one to replace it with. Can't hurt.

I ordered mine tonight from them as well. Has anybody confirmed this is the exact replacement they are using for the recalls?

To my knowledge they haven't actually started doing the recall replacements so I don't think we have a read on that just yet.

Thankfully mine isn't under the recall. So far, I haven't experienced any of the problems of the third gen.

I got a carista app, but the Carista app from the playstore doesn't seem display any oh that information. I tried something called dash commander and it did t work. The Carista app said there were no faults with my car.

What apps on the playstore display this information with the Carista?
