Has anyone swapped across an engine immobilizer system from a 98+ 4-Runner? Most parts such as the ignition transceiver look interchangeable, there's a separate immobilizer module that can be spliced in, really just need to figure out the differences in wiring to the engine ECU - is it interrupting spark, fuel pump relay control, etc?

I'm not sure if anyone's done it, but for that sort of project you really want to get the Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) for both vehicles so you can compare.

Get the exact years if you can, as wiring (including wire colors) changes year over year.

They're usually easy to find on eBay, either used or new printings, and there are some PDF copies floating around the internet as well.

The cover should look like this:

It's not that simple, the ECM is an integral part of the Immobilizer system.
You can't just take an Immobilizer unit and tie it to a random ECM, the Immobilizer and ECM operate as a pair.

The security info and key codes are stored in the Immobilizer unit and the ECM is responsible for disabling the engine, when a correct key is detected by the Immobilizer it communicates with the ECM to tell it to enable the engine.

The Immobilizer system essentially consists of 4 parts all of which have to be compatible with each other:

    Immobilizer ECU (Transponder Key Amplifier)
    Transponder Key Coil
    ECM
    Transponder Key

Too complicated as mentioned. Rather do the removable steering wheel vs alarm. Without a steering wheel, it is extremely hard to drive fast and far.

I believe if you have the RS3200 alarm system installed it will disable the starter if the alarm is triggered. Look at page 4 and 5 of the instruction sheet for the features: OMTADG0173D.pdf. It also has ignition switch detection so if someone tries to hotwire the car it will trigger and thus disable the starter in that scenario as well. Aside from the microchip inside the key like the 4Runner has, I think this is the next best thing and it's well documented with install instructions.
