You can get an adapter from the Carista folks. The app allows you to do dealer Customizations also. But, yes. OBD Fusion is more useful for monitoring. I have them both plus Torque.

Definitely a big difference. I have ovtune and never really liked how the truck drove on 2.0 felt stock was better and now with the new tsb even better

Lol. “Lack of power, delay/hesitation, shifty shifty shifty”. They’ve been rolling out these ECU updates for 5 years now to fix these issues. Toyota clearly CAN NOT map this truck/engine in a way that satisfies disappointed owners and the CAFE standards at the same time. If they could, it would have been done a long time ago.

The fix is easy. It’s probably sitting in a folder on someone’s MacBook. But the fix isn’t gonna come to us without some larger decisions being made in a boardroom.

Just a guess. I could be wrong.

Dealer picked up the truck this morning for the fuel pump recall. They are going to do the TSB for me. Cant wait to experience the difference. :bananadance:

Has anyone with a later 2020 build had this TSB done? My truck was built in July, and my VIN does fall in the listed range. I can't say the shifting is horrible, but it does have times where it'd be nice if it shifted at smarter moments. I brought it into the dealer and they told me they'd do it, but when they connected it to the computer they said it already had this latest version.

I don't find much difference driving with ECT on either, so maybe the dealer is right? I do know they test drove it (I checked the dash cam footage), and got the classic "cannot replicate" response. I anticipated this answer when I dropped it off, so I offered to just pay the quoted 0.4 hours to have it done (I don't want to waste my time again), but they reassured me that wouldn't be necessary, and they'd install it, so I don't know if they have any reason to BS me.

You likely already have the update. My 2020 with build date of 08/2020 came with it. Think I saw a post yesterday where someone with a similar build date as yours who also already had it.

    Yep!

My build date is 2/20. I have similar shifting problems that occur on occasion. Putting mid grade gas in has helped (in my mind) the shifting. Can someone with a similar build date, tell me if you tried to have the ECU flashed, but the dealer said the ECU is already up to date.

A simple OBD2 Reader will tell you what version ECU is currently on your truck.
I recently searched for, and found one for exactly this purpose:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/obd2-scanner-questions.694851/page-2#post-24566558

It is also a very useful tool to have for diagnosing issues/problems.
Not all of them will detect the ECU ID, but the two mentioned in the above post do. Read the whole thread for more info.

My statement from this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/page-194#post-24772076

I was already quite happy with my truck, but now it is even a little bit better.
Like everyone else is saying, I noticed how it now holds gears longer before down-shifting; and I noticed how much more responsive the throttle is now, and how much smoother the throttle response is also.
Another big improvement that I noticed is how smoothly it runs when I first start it while it is cold. Before, it wanted to surge hard as I was pulling out of my garage, and I had to hold it back with the brakes; now it runs very smoothly when first started, and I don't have to stand on the brakes to hold it back.

I'm still noticing other minor improvements too. Overall, I would describe this Update as a very nice enhancement/refinement to an already good truck, and I heartily recommend it!

Have to agree with a good amount of this other than being pretty happy before the TSB.

Wondered if I was the only one who experienced the surging. After reading this, remembered that was an issue before the reflash. Also, can report after a drive up the hills that it does a great job of downshifting with little pedal input and holds the gears nicely without prematurely up-shifting.

On a side note, just put 285/75/16’s on. (Were on during the drive up the hills). Thought I was going to have to rush to get a regear done. Thanks to this new tune, I’m pretty happy with the performance.

Is a re-gear every bit as reliable as the original factory set-up? (As far as strength/durability)

Think that would depend on the brand of gears and the actual work performed. Sure there’s other factors. I’ll defer to the persons with more expertise to chime in. I have no hesitation abandoning the stock gearing for aftermarket.

Hey guys I finally got a chance to read this . I want to let yall know that I am not to smarts when it comes to the lingo on some things here and my age is kinda up there a little so please have patience with me. I have the 9/20 TRD 4x4 Model with A/T and reading what yall are going through, mine is acting the same way. I do have the V-6 CZ5AN and it just feels like I have a 3500 stall converter in it and it seems like its either in a higher gear from take off at times and sluggish on power. Its got I think a 3.73 gear and to me it should have some pull out of the whole( I mean from a take off or redlight). Its kinda like its not getting enough fuel I guess is the way it feels.I see where some say here that the 21 that is the newer may have the 04B81. I honestly cant tell yall what that is.Now I wonder if mine fell through the cracks and didnt get it done.Is there a place where I can look for the Toyota recalls ? Im guessing the NHTSA but not 100% positive. I downloaded the info with the 5 pages from above and wonder if I take it and ask them to check it I wonder if they will being its under 2k miles.I just want to thank all of yall for the help and so glad I found this site. Now to look for some decent priced seat covers that wont break the piggy bank.

You're not skipped. There are no updates for the 2021s. None may be needed. Like I said, folks will have to see what happens at the end of the MY run o even next year.

The main thing is, is it running well?

Yes sir it seems to be to me running fine-its just when driving it that it feels like its sluggish but I have never owned a 4x4 and never owned a Toyota ever and bought my wife a 2020 Highlander and we traded her R/T challenger in on this truck. They both are awesome and I am sold on the toyotas now. I had worked on a guys 03 Tundra v8 if I can remember right(it could had been a tocama-been years ago) I loved the way it drove. I recently sold my 08 silverado with 5.3 3.42 gear and I oned it and older model Ford truck but this little ride I love. I even told the salesman that I didnt like 4 doors on a vehicle ever and what did I do? I got one and love it.--sorry to get off subject there but, with 278HP and 240 ish Ft pounds of torque is it suppose to feel a little slow like from a start and hesitate a little in the shifting part? I live in the country but, dont hunt and dont go near mud if I dont have to so I drive it wth the 2wd and traction control on.Oh and please forgive me but, dont know what the MY stands for.
