^ That's a driving style thing. I went from low 19's on a good day and average of high 17s when I was stock. And I'm down to about 17 even with my lift and tires.

    08 AC 6Spd. 33's and a 3 inch lift.

I am questioning the 22-23mpg people myself.

I only have 3000 miles so I know it is going to improve slightly. I average in the 19mpg range every week, which is basically my drive to work (not many stops, avg speed of 45mph).

Seems like highways driving is worse.

I've done that for the last 10 months (since I've bought my truck) and I have a lifetime average of 18.22 MPG in all conditions. That includes a full Canadian winter and a handful of trips towing my boat.

In the warmer months (Jun to Sep) I generally always get 20-21 MPG with mixed driving. That was when the truck was brand new, I expect it could be even better now that I have some miles on it. My best tank was 21.72 MPG and that was pure highway. My worst tank was 13.32 MPG and that was when temps were -30 to -40.

I normally drive with a light foot and on the highway I usually keep it right around 60-65 MPH. 20 MPG can easily be done if you keep the speed down and you aren't agressive with the throttle.

This number is possible but ONLY if done exactly like you said. Hence my comment in my last post about the Taco being built with the aerodynamics of a brick.

After you exceed 60 wind drag starts to slap you in the face. If you can keep it under 60 and stay in your top gear the whole time you'll get some impressive mileage for sure.

I think I've broken 22 on my 4.0 2wd automatic a couple times. Usually I'm around 19-20mpg. It seems like the best approach for me is to just drive it like it's a diesel and keep it under 2000 rpms at all times. Of course it doesn't hurt matters that I live in Central Illinois which is second to Kansas in it's flatness...

Got 30 fill ups tracked via Fuelly :D

Having a Prerunner helps in the mileage department considerably.

For those doubting the numbers of some who say they've had over 20 and 21, it's certainly possible. I've kept track of my mileage with a spreadsheet, so I have the numbers to prove mine has done it.

That said, while I used to regularly get into the 20.0s and even above 21 MPG, these days I can't seem to break out of the 19s. I really think it's due to increased usage of ethanol. I just can't get nearly the same mileage out of a tank as I used to get.

Most of the really low numbers (sub 15) are from some out of the ordinary circumstance, like pulling a heavy trailer. Anything above 22 is also not legit. I know i have a 25 in there somewhere, but it's not correct due to a partial fill or something, I don't remember.

My driving style consists of coasting to stops from far away, NEVER getting RPM above 2500 (usually shift right at 2000 RPM), keeping her at 60-65 max on freeway. My truck has just always gotten bad milage, from day one....funny thing is, now that I have 33" tires, lift, and a buch of armor (weight), she still gets the same (adjustd for tires) milage.

It's not just about the rpm's. It's about the % throttle too.

True, and I crawl in my truck. I get my speed out wiht my bike, so I drive my truck like a grandpa. coasting most places and crawling from a start.

An engine is a mechanical assembly, with thousands of parts, each of which has a tolerence. Mine just happen to fit together to produce some pretty poor milage.

This post seems to be the most accurate, but I'm assuming he is calculating on an Imperial Gallon. Which would turn 21 mpg to 17.5 - 18mpg US. I did a highway drive yesterday, and it was one of those rare days, when the wind was almost calm. Speed VS mileage below:
    45 MPH - 8.5LHK - 33 Cmpg - 27.6 USmpg
    55 MPH - 10LHK - 28 Cmpg - 24 USmpg
    65 MPH - 11LHK - 26 Cmpg - 21.4 USmpg
    70 MPH - 12.5LHK - 23.5 Cmpg - 18.7 USmpg
    75 MPH - 13.5LHK - 21 Cmpg - 17.5 USmpg

This was almost no wind, travelled round trip both ways, level road, warm drivetrain, right around freezing. SacngaugeII corrected fuel consumption, corrected for speedo / odo. Regular fuel, flat road, truck empty. This removes the driver element, as there is no acceleration involved, so this is the best the truck would possibly do. Average for the trip (350kms) was obviously worse with 2 cold starts, and acceleration. Short of driving less than 60 mph all the time, I have a hard time understanding how anyone (w/4X4)would average much better than 20 US mpg. Maybe my A/T's drop a mpg or so at 70. I also run Mobil 1 0W30. Fuel in my area has about 7% Ethanol, which could affect mileage 1.5%

I finally hit 20mpg and it was just after my first oil change. Never really thought about it but perhaps that has something to do with it?

I don't regularly check my MPG though!! I just drive it hard and enjoy it. It's a truck after all and not a Civic ;)

This statement may be true for a 4x4 but not for 4x2. After throwing in some fuel injector cleaner on 03/07/10 and getting graced with warmer weather I've kicked back up to the 22.5-23.5 range over the last three tanks.

Oh no, I was referring to my spreadsheet. The numbers in my spreadsheet for my truck above 22 are not legit. I'm not saying it can't be done.

My numbers are based on the US gallon Isthatahemi. Current running average is 13.09 LHK or 17.97 US MPG. There was a small rounding error because of the way I summarized my data in my earlier running average of 18.22 US MPG but I figure the difference is immaterial :)

I should add that I also run 91 Octane so that will also help the mileage . . .

We could all get 10% better if they stopped cutting our gas with ethanol.
