Interesting. Is there a thread about this I'm guessing?

    Sure is. Cheapmods thread.

But you don't get a huge boost off of doing that just FYI.

I always reset my Trip A trip-o-meter everytime I fill up my truck. I have the 1st gen PreRunner TRD. I consistently get 270 miles for 15 gallons. That's about 18 mpg. My truck is 12 years old and just hit 100K this week.

Haha believe it! I don't start up quickly, i never run the rpms over 2000, except on highway when im in fifth, but then its never over 2500. I have a manual, and if i'm going down hill, im definately going to coast becuase I'm going to eventually have to go back up one which will suck the gas. I honestly get around 28, before this truck, i had a regular cab, no extras, just a tonneau cover, and i'd get around 30-32, driving the same way I do now. The scan guage helps a ton too since you get to actually see whats going down. I'm not a terribly agressive driver which helps. it's definately possible to get 28 on a full tank of gas. If i do a ton of little short trips, i only get around 26, but when im actually driving, i get 28, sometimes 30 depending where I went most and how much I got to coast, or if i hit nasty traffic. It all depends, but the key is to not drive like a bat out of hell when you take off.

I can confirm the possibilty of 24-ish mpg in a 4WD. I have an access cab and average about 24 mpg in the summer (don't ask about winter mpg with snow tires, please). My high is 26 mpg, even got 502 miles on one tank of gas. I shift at 2000 rpm, run in neutral sometimes on downhills, and have 35 psi in my tires. I drive fast, but I drive easy.

I can attest a tank of 25.8 coming back from the mountains, probably with no ac. so I know those are attainable. Its the avg 28 and max of 33 that I wish I could pull off. I run max psi and don't lug the engine. I drive rather spirited once I get up to speed and always try to maintain my momentum :). I'm debating gettting the scangauge especiually if I can increase my mileage enough to return on the investment. It sounds like it will work in my wife's 09 jetta as well.

I definately support the scanguage. My dad has an 02 TDI Jetta, which is a beast. It gets 54 miles to the gallon, gotta love diesel. The problem in there lies when the freaking check engine light comes on for something not important (like time for an oil change), the ONLY way to get it off is with a OBDII scanner, which the dealer tells you they have to do...yeah, no they dont. lol

My 2000 4X4 Tocoma with the 2.7 I got 24-27 mpg. This 09 V6 in 4X4 I get 18 to 20 on excellent down hill with a tailwind. Thinking now I should have stayed with the 2.7 engine. But only auto's were on the used lot.

I've got a 04 TDI Auto and if toyota would read the blogs on the diesels I can't help but feel they would put a diesel in the TACOMA.

Did you ever consider supercharging your 2.7? Just curious how it would run and what kind of mpg you would get. Toyota has to do something with the truck mileage now that CAFE stds are being applied to the truck production lines....

4cyl 2.7l 4x4 base cab. With K&N air intake and tonneau cover I once got nearly 26mpg driving from wv to baltimore (through the cumberland mountains). this also involved lots of drafting behind semis and buses lol. I usually average 21-23 mpg highway

I am pretty sure I did my math right on my 2010 doublecab 4x4 and I keep getting 22-24 mix driving. Then again my wife said i drive like an old man. I never Jack rabbit or even taking it higher than 2k rpm during acceleration.

i'm pretty sure the s/c would make mileage go down. more air=more fuel. thats why they come with larger injectors.

Taco's V6 TRD like mine should be no less than 20MPG, mine is 23 and have heavy foot, 4cil should be higher than 25, 4x4 less than 20... simple things!!!!

Major changes for incresing gas milage i can personally consider:
    1) Driver habits, no more than 2000 RPM is a huge diference...
    2) Engine: Air filter, spark plugs, tires pressure up to 32
    3) AC usage

Please enumerate any other a missed..

also all synthetic fluids... supposedly makes a small difference, cant say that I've seen one though.

I just did a turn and burn from Lake Havasu City Az. to Anacortes Wa. overall mpg was 20.15. Ranged from 17.85 to 21.00 varried due to heavy foot, wind, altitude, temp. and mountain passes. Overall I am very pleased prior to break in my mileage was way bad. (2010 4x4 sport)

I was disappointed with the lack of performance options on my stock model truck until I filled up a few times. 4cyl Access got 22 until I put a cap on it, now gets 24+. I guess I'd rather add the options I see fit with the money saved at the pump.

Regularly get 22+MPG...best I've gotten is 25.3mpg...V6, DC, 6 speed. Most hihway driving is 110-115kph or 65-70mph for our Amerian friends, if i want to get 10MPG i COULD DO THAT AS WELL...
