I have an 08 4 cyl auto access cab and was wondering what can I do to increase fuel mileage. I already have K&N air filter on it, I don't want to do anything to the exhaust yet. Any ideas?

well......you can take out the secondary air filter..........gives the 4 banger a decent change. and,if you wanted to....you can swap the k&n out for a afe pro dry s air filter. its a dry filter, and filters better than a k&n.

x2 on the secondary air filter. The K&N may provide the best air flow, however it does not do the best job filtering

open up the airbox.....its right behind the normal air filter. its connected by small plastic rivets.............you can cut the heads off with a razor knife......just make sure no plastic shavings get into the intake. here is more info......................http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/performance-tuning/2012-diy-secondary-air-filter-removal.html

We only have about 24 months left till an Air Force retirement and then we leave this God forsaken place they call Kommifornia. Thanks for the info on the filter, I guess I can leave it alone till we leave. My 4 door Tacoma (2000 V6 Prerunner) would get 19/21 mpg in Hawaii and my Wifes car would get 28 mpg(these were averaged per tank for 4 years) there but when we came to Kommifornia my truck dropped to 14 mpg and my Wifes car dropped to 21 mpg, these were averaged per tank for about a year. Finally found a Tech at the local Toyota Stealership that told me it was the way Kommifornia formulates it's gas.

Wonder if that has anything to do with the Ethanol content in the CA gas vs the HI gas. 14 for a 4cyl seems reeeeaaly bad to me. I get 23 in town with mine. All I have done is remove the secondary air filter and the mud flaps. Removing the secondary air filter didn't really seem to help anything much from what I could tell, but I think I only had it a week of two when I removed it so who knows.

The vehicles averaged the same in Maryland as Hawaii, we did 3 yrs in Md and 4 in Hi then came to Kali and that is when the mpg went down starting with the very first tank on each vehicle.

What is it that CA puts in their gas....MTBE

It supposedly doesn't produce as much smog, but lowers mpg's. Combine that with Ethanol (not sure if it's in gas in CA) and you will probably get a few mpg's less than with "normal" gasoline.

However, 14 in a 4-banger sounds really low, even for CA and even city driving. I think I'd have it checked out.

The 14 mpg was for my 01 4 door Tacoma with the v-6. My 2008 Auto Access Cab 4 cyl gets around 21/22 mpg city.
