The mpg “improvement over time” is that just new ownership excitement diminishing over time? Over time, drivers just stop testing out their trucks gears, rpm range, acceleration, etc. and just end up driving normally.

Like others have said....long to medium road trips with few if any lights....24-25mpg. Lot of lights, idling on shorter trips gives me 18-20mpg. Of course I hypermile every chance I get.

With 500 miles you are only about halfway through the stupid transmissions "learning phase" assuming its an automatic. I was ready to trade my '17 back for my '14 because the truck just had no power, you had to put the pedal to the floor when making yielded left turns to not get T-boned, and there was this crazy ramp up in power over 3500 rpm followed by short shifting. I think I was getting 8-9 mpg because I was frustrated as fuck, my right foot showed it, and I kept it in ECT ON. On a buddy's advice who had also recently bought two '16's I waited till 1k miles before taking it back to the dealer and asking for my old truck back. Between 1020 and 1050 miles the truck totally changed behavior and I no longer had to keep my right foot in its ass to get it moving. In a week I was seeing ~18.0-19.5 mpg with mostly 80mph 25 mile commutes. Currently a little less as I give it 5-10 mins in the morning to let it warm up while I'm getting my stuff together. Sitting at 23.5k miles

    Hi Friends,

So here's my situation and what I've done to improve. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where it's real cold all the time:

2019 TRD Sport Long bed / Double cab

    - 33 PSI cold on all 4 corners

    - I religiously only drive using the S shifter. I find it helps overcome the "transmission hunting for a gear" problem and it keeps the revs in control as you drive. I'll take off from 0 and shift up to 2nd manually @ 15km/h . Shift to 3rd manually @ around 25 km/h , Shift to 4th manually @ 40km/. Once im in 4th I don't feel bad giving more throttle. I'll force a low-rev shift into 5th at around 60km/h and I find it definitely helps consumption.

    - Same speal about intertia and hypermiling. Make sure you only throttle when necessary and use gravity/momentum to your advantage.

I've owned 13 new cars/trucks and each one got better mileage after a few thousand miles. The ones that came with Synthetic oil from the factory didn't fully break in until around 10,000 miles. Cars run like crap for that first tank. There's a lot of things that break in besides the Engine. You'll be fine.

My average this winter driving mostly to and from work and to town has been 17-18. I made trip across State late last year and made it to 21 mpg driving 70-75 mph on flat interstate. And I’ve got bigger tires. I always remind myself it’s a truck that’s fun to drive. I always buy cheap gas. I watch the mileage but am not concerned about a few mpg either way. It’s a cool truck!

Short trips kill mileage. It normally takes about 15-20 minutes of driving for everything to get up to operating temperature.. the first 10 ten minutes from a cold start are going g to be horrible. Then it starts to improve rapidly. I average 19 mpg in the city with a 6 mile commute. When I drive 10 miles it goes up to 20-21 when I drove 17 miles interstate at 65mph)from a far work location to my gym I got 23.

speed kills too when I drive 75 in the interstate it’s 17-19 mpg depending I wind. 80 mph drops it below 17mpg.
