Nice post OP. Never understood the comments some make about 2wd and 4wd. Many who make them are the ones with the image problem and them selves never need or use it but only have it as an extension of their manhood to name drop every time. They are the same people that put 4x4 in anything they type and justify it by saying they get a light dusting of snow or ice once every two years down south and need it. Those are the people that shouldn't be on the road and I feel sorry for.

Our last truck was a 2wd with a locker and it never got stuck and went to some questionable places and up certain areas (including a snow covered steep parking garage). Tires and some common sense make all the difference in most cases. Some people like the look of an off road, what does it matter if it says TRD off road on it, does it effect your TRD 4x4's in some ways? No, you shouldn't be that image conscious where it bothers you; if so I again feel sorry for those that do.

All this is doing is making me want to add a locker to my 4x2... I really want to figure out a way to add the OR's e-locker to my SR, but no one has confirmed swappability yet. I know on the 2nd gen it's a no go but looking at parts diagrams for the 3rd member on 3rd gens:
it looks like the cases are actually all interchangeable as long as the trans is the same type.

Also, I would have thought after 4 pages this thread would have turned into a much bigger shit show.:crapstorm:

My plan all along in buying a 4x2 was to do a selectable locker in the rear, quality tires, and add a hidden winch. If I can't unfuck myself with those items, I deserve to be fucked because I went somewhere a mid-size, mid wheelbase truck didn't belong in the first place.

Here's the way I see it: My biggest outdoor loves are surfing and climbing. Not driving an automobile over things. I use the truck to get to my favorite things... as long as it gets me to my favorite crags, breaks and walls I'm happy.

As a rule climbers are inherently (affectionately) "dirtbags". We don't like to spend money on things. Tons of surfers and climbers roll in prerunners. Because it gets us where we need to go at a more affordable price (MPG and base cost). When I was a true "dirtbag" I just rolled in my '87 22R. But now I got a fam and times change blah. Honestly, I'd rather be climbing or surfing than driving.

Anyone who has to write a diatribe to convince random internet people about their truck, knows deep down inside they bought the wrong truck.

I was going to write a 14 page essay about why the third gen isn't the huge POS everyone makes it out to be, but I got sidetracked by a weird clicking noise under the hood and shifting issues... Totally forgot about it.

Ouch. See, I thought this was a super great conversation. Not some attack nor justification. Like the title says "In Defense Of The Prerunner". Maybe it's a response. Do you feel attacked? I'd have to say your bar is set pretty low, brother. And a yr bit on edge. Not like most of the Aussies I've run into in my travels. Oh whoops, was that a diatribe?!

Im not Aussie. Just an old nickname I've used as an internet login for years. Seems your bar is the low one.

Yeah, I know I've rubbed others the wrong way. I'm the equivalent of 80 grit, but usually 120. It's the internet like I said. Most of us who do act like this in person would have their asses kicked or handed to them if they voiced themselves like they do as "internet commando".

Ah, so misrepresenting yourself as a good natured human being then? Copy that. All validity out the window. Well, you sound a little butt hurt. Maybe it's because you paid $5k more than me for the same truck - only heavier - with a button you don't push.
