In line PS filter?

    I ran a magnefine inline filter on the low pressure return hose. No issues.

    I disagree. These power steering hoses can last a very very long time and maybe never be required to changed. PicknPull yards are filled with 3rd Gen 4runners with original power steering lines because people for one reason or another decided to junk their vehicle.

    I would also never advise someone to buy an aftermarket pressure hose. That's asking for problems. I advise people to buy OEM for things like this.

    Lastly, the filters are for extra filtration to extend the life of the pump and the life of the steering rack. I don't view them as preventative maintenance for line deterioration. The Magnefine filters last for 30k miles.

    Yep, our approaches certainly differ here. I'm good with that, even though I disagree. I've never had an issue with a gates product, and I'd certainly take that over another 20 year old hose that has been rotting in a junkyard with an unknown history, no matter who made it. Rubber parts have a finite life and building pressure hoses is not rocket science.

    What is the usual failure mode for a steering rack and pump anyway? I'm not convinced that an additional filter is anything more than a feel good and an additional potential leak.

    Yeah, let's agree to disagree. My point with the Wrecking Yard is the vehicles often go to the grave yard with original hoses still on there. So, they lasted for the lifetime of the vehicle.

    The additional filter serves to keep your fluid cleaner so you'll never have to worry about a clogged power steering reservoir screen or worry about a clogged trans filter screen. Changing out one of these magnetic filters is super easy, much easier than dropping a transmission pan and much easier than removing the power steering reservoir and spending the time to clean it.

    I'm saying you're throwing money away replacing parts that might not be necessary to change and you're saying I'm wasting money on extra filtration. For me, I'm not going to change out a Toyota OEM hose and replace it with an inferior aftermarket one. It's the same reason why I'm not going to install Moog balljoints on my rig either.

    To each his own, I reckon. I've spent too much time debating this. On to something more constructive with my time.
