Which is more ideal?

  1. Keeping the engine at 2k RPM for longer periods (using ECT Power) with less shifting

And I think OVtune deserves an honorable mention. Completely different animal. In the best of ways. Skeptical believer before but man, what a difference. Shifting is spot on (19770).

ECT is for when you and the truck are still getting to know each other. Not required once you become ‘one’ with the Taco

This wouldn't be such a big deal if it were the 2UR downshifting/upshifting for no reason like it were in the 'Bullitt' chase scene.

Ha, I'd get 3mpg if we got the 5.0. cue 2:30

The only time I really cared about the transmission shift points was when reading about them before I bought my taco, and maybe for a few days after. Pretty quickly it stopped being something I noticed one bit. Drives fine around town. Yes on interstate inclines it shifts, but without a loud exhaust it doesn't really change anything for me while driving. In my opinion it shifts so smoothly without any power loss that I simply don't notice it anymore. My $.02.

I think if Toyota put more sound deadening in the cabin, removed the tach, and put a quieter exhaust on, this whole subject would have never come up. Guys complain because they can see and hear it happening. Also a lot of people don’t know how auto transmissions work, and this is the first one they’ve paid attention to.

nah, more gears, closer ratios=more hunting. The new 8-10 spds. are even worse. I have more a problem driving an Odyssey (as far as shifting pains) w/ a 5 spd. than an old Sienna w/ a 4 spd. Esp. on cruise control, an overpass means downshifting where as the 4 I could almost climb a 6% bridge in 4th.

Be glad Toyo. has shunned cylinder management so far. We'd be rioting.

My old 2000 4Runner (V6) would do the same thing, but way less refined. It would let the RPMS drop too low causing it to lose speed on an incline, then suddenly drop two gears - doing its best to spill any drink in the cab and wake up sleeping passengers. Similar story in my old Tahoe (V8), but worse.

I'm just saying every auto trans truck/SUV I've ever owned has changed gears on the highway in response to inclines, headwinds, etc. My current Tacoma is by far the most refined and least annoying of any of them. There is no harsh transition and the truck typically retains its speed. I have 285/70's now by the way. Besides abysmal gas mileage, I'm still very pleased with how it drives. Compared to any older truck/SUV I've owned, it's smooth as butter.
