Go to settings>bluetooth. Then go and tap on your phone. You should see that screen I showed.

I just turn on the adaptive cruise so I can read them and text back on the phone!

This was a lifesaver and will resolve the OP’s concern.
Ultimately, he can’t hear his texts coming through because the volume level is low, and the radio continues to play toggling that setting, you gain control of all those volume controls.
I made a post about the navigating verbal directions were whisper, quiet, and I had zero control over them. I toggle that setting and now I can crank everything up as loud as the radio. Let definitely a lifesaver for me….

Thank you for replying. I cannot get these controls to work when I am using CarPlay. They remain greyed out when I am using CarPlay. Are you able to control then while using CarPlay?

I have no idea if it’s actually utilizing apple car play or not, I am technically challenged, just like you…
But now those 3 volume adjustments are blue. & adjustable.
    I have them cranked.
Now, when text messages play through the vehicles NAV unit, I’m able to adjust the volume of the text messages messages coming through via the radio knob and I can crank it to 60 if I wanted to.
Everything still works as it should, I can play Spotify, navigation works, radio sound when I request to hear, text messages, etc.
I am a hey Siri, do this, do that guy…
