Yes, I often get very distraught when I am 262 miles from empty! I feel your pain brother!

Okay y’all, I’m asking in this thread to avoid all the BS. Here’s the deal:

I have the opportunity to buy either an 88 4Runner or 89 pickup. They are the same price and both in generally the same condition with no rust. The 4Runner has a 4 inch lift. They are both stock other than that. Both manual 4x4s. I don’t plan on modding them, but who knows. I make no promises cause this forum is dangerous.

    How does one decide?

EDIT: this would be for cruising around town and some occasional trails.

What will you be using the vehicle for? A toy/trail vehicle, a work horse, just back and forth to work?
Is the 4runner the one with the removable top? If so, that would definitely be my choice.

what is the second vehicle for? i would go with the 4runner just because i already have a truck. it’s just going to depend on why you need or want this vehicle. let us know what you decide.

yeah, it does have that removable top. But it rains here. A lot. Bad storms and hurricanes so I’m not so keen on anything even remotely convertible.

yeah, I forgot to mention. This is just for commuting and some light trails. Maybe up in the mountains some. In July. At even the first sign of snow and salt it’s not coming outside to play. My 3rd gen is 2wd. :(

4Runner hands down between these two. Oh wait. 4” lift? Can that be brought back to factory... any permanent cuts?

I bought an ‘88 4Runner in 2009. Really like it. It needed some AC work and the steering wheel vinyl rubbed off regularly, but I really liked it. We moved and stayed in our condo for a year and I just couldn’t keep it and the FJ. If I’d had the space, I’d still have the 4Runner.

Child booster seat, spilled glitter slime, chicken nugget crumbs, spilled milkshake in cupholder, and many more courtesy of daughter.
I watched CL and FB Marketplace daily for about a year and a couple months straight. Came across 2 that entire time in my state/surrounding states. The 1st, ONE person beat me to it. The 2nd, I came across it 10 mins or less after the seller posted, and offered to paypal half the money for deposit in order for him to hold it for me until I got off work that day.. After meeting and buying, guy tells me he had 30+ people contact him within those few hours trying to do the same...

So all that to say that a used color matched 'for a fair price' is a unicorn.
A new color matched can be had for $1200+ depending on options.
A used mismatched and painted later can be about the price of just going new, unless you find an absolute steal somewhere. Good luck with the search!

My recommendation: stash some money away, and be ready to drop everything you're doing at any moment to make it happen if you're hoping for a used, color matched or not.
