Got chewed out in that exact spot by a lady ranger for taking some picks of a bear. She was all freaked out that the bear was going to go nuts and attack me even though it was like 50 yards away and way to busy foraging to even notice humans were present. When you consider the fact that I had obviously just come out from a week+ in the back country her reaction was ridiculous.

That is why I recognized the spot.

sounds like a fun time. a black bear comes by my house pretty often every summer. I've taken to naming her Dewie. closest I've been was 10 ft away....she kinda looked at me, grunted and went on her way

In Yose 50 yards is considered too close. It's partly "if i let you do it... I have to let others..."
The protection is not for you, the bear likely will not attack, but far too many venture far too close. And with the deer it's even worse. The bears have been habituated for so long, the rangers are in the process (years-long) to uncondition them to humans. We do nightly bear patrols thru the campgrounds. And every night we have to run bears away from shit humans have left out even after reading and being told over and over and over again to put their food away.

I'm sorry it happened to you. Being in the backcountry has nothing to do with it. One of the biggest hurdles with visitors is "well it walked up to me, I didn't walk over to it." No. you're not to let the animal approach you. Following the Rule of Thumb, 50 yards is too close. (I work with both SAR and PSAR trying to prevent incidents. I cannot tell you how many times in just a day I gave to tell visitors to back away from wildlife. Don't feed the animals. Our rodents carry active cases of plague. We have active hanta virus. We have active rabies cases. And yet visitors want to pet the animals. This is not a zoo.

I get what you are saying, but I was literally standing in front of my car parked right where you were. I was not approaching the bear and the bear was not approaching me. It was truly an over-reaction on her part. In fairness to her she was young (at my age everyone is) and probably new on the job so I hold no hard feelings.

Also have good friends who until this year were assistant camp hosts at upper pines and have been on more than one bear chase. It is very important that they learn to be afraid of us again.
