    I'm broke?
    Hi all,

I am new to the forum, but not new to the best truck ever built, the legendary Taco!

I owned a 2000 4x4,3.4L, and sold the truck in 2009. I made a few mistakes in 2009, and selling my truck and buying a fast car was probably one of them :)

Now I am back in the market for a 4x4 Tacoma. I was planning on spending anywhere from $12-$18k, maybe up to $20k for a great deal on a 2nd gen. But as I am scanning all over the web and classifieds, I am starting to think that the prices for used 1st gen's have become seriously inflated. On top of inflated prices, I have come to believe that there are a good number of people and dealers that poach all of the good Tacos sold by private sellers(especially on Craigslist!)

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon? After seeing what looks like inflated prices, it has pushed me towards buying a 2nd gen. It appears as if the 2nd gen model years is actually a better value. Is a 2nd gen truck really a better value, or am I just trying to convince myself to go and buy that $20k 2nd gen :) Let me know what you guys think!

    Thanks!

First gen tacomas hold there value really well. They have two very good motors and are built very well. Tacomas have always held there value and now that i am searching for a 4 runner they hold there value a little but not as much as the tacomas.

The first gens are quite pricey. When I was looking for a replacement for my '99 I was amazed at what the 03's and 04's were going for, even ones that hadn't been reframed. Trucks with 140K were listed for $12-14k, which was made more ridiculous by the 06's and 07's listed for the same price range. I ended up going with a '10 because there was no way I was paying over $10k for a 10 year old truck.

I was considering buying a 2003 TRD 4x4, Double Cab, with 167,000 for $13k.. Then I sobered up and realized that is wayyy too much for a 10 year old truck with 167,000! I just cant get over the prices for 1st gen Tacomas in the SF Bay area.

I saw a 2001 TRD with 42,000 miles a couple days ago they wanted 14K for it. This one isn't a great color, but seems like a nice deal for someone looking for a first gen.

    :(
Change the color to "desert sand mica" and that's my old truck, exactly. I miss it (and not having a payment, so I didn't mind beating on it a little!)

Why do you say its a bad time of year to buy a truck? I've heard the complete opposite. Dealers are trying to get all their sales done before the new year. The worst time to buy a car is supposedly spring, when everyone gets a "paycheck" from Uncle Sam.

I sold a bone stock '97 4WD reg cab 2.7l for $6500 last year, original owner. No radio, no AC, it did have a Leer 180 shell on it. It only had 103k miles on it, dude that got that truck got a deal. Had new BFG KO's on it. I thought it would go for more like $7k, but as soon as I said, "No air conditioning" the buyers went bye-bye. Pussies.

Yeah 1st gens are REAL inflated.... i searched for a month and a half i live 40 mi north of LA here in so cal.... from northern california to southern, arizona and nevada... found maybe 8 1st gen 4x4's worth looking at and they all ended up being owned by flakes. ... went and looked at an 02 4x4 AC v6 auto with TRD badges.... notice i said trd badges.... all the pics had the stickers of TRD off road... showed up... its missing the rear locker and is a base Sr5 package... guy stated the previous owner must of put the stickers on.... just after telling me the previous owner was a 65 year old guy that used it as a ranch truck.... RIIIIIGHT.... took it for a test drive went to put it in 4lo (stopped in neutral of course) and the tcase just grinded the gears... syncromesh on the tcase was gone.... so i slammed it back into 4high, took it out of 4 wheel, drove back to the shop and said have a good day and walked out.

And to think i was going to pay 13k out the door (it was at a lil used car dealer) for a 14 year old truck with 150k miles on it.

So happy i bought a new tacoma.

There are some smoking deals around here on 2005-2006 AC 4WD Base models. I have seen two clean ones , one owner with higher miles, 130-150 K for under 8500.00 Both were guys that had families and needed something bigger, and seemed pretty negotiable. I missed a Regular cab 2007 SR-5 4 WD model a little while back, one owner bone stock with 70,000 miles and really clean. It was asking priced at 10,500 but sold over night. That was one nice looking truck, and they are hard to find around here optioned like that.

I agree with this. I saw a 2002 dcsb 4x4 a while back with close to 150k that was stock except an aftermarket front bumper and the guy wanted 14,200$ thats crazy

You wont believe this one.. I went to a Toyota dealership in Nor Cal, signed all the paperwork for the truck. When they sold me the truck, they told me that it was Toyota Certified. The next day the salesman calls me and tells me that they cant certify the truck because its been in a wreck. So I told them no deal on the truck :(
