I've spent an unreasonable amount of time searching the web and TW for 4WD info that is relevant to my 2000. I've got a FSM but I'm missing pages and it's not the best sources to tell me what and where all of the compacts are.

Apparently mine is vacuum actuated? But I don't know for sure.

Sorry, for having to post asking for links, but I need to spend the rest of my time actually fixing my truck.

Just what are you trying to do?

Tell us the problem we can get you through the trouble shooting

These vacuum hoses do tend to dry rot look at the simple things first .

Hello N.N VA. I'm in Gloucester. Q#1 do you have locking hubs? Q#2 do you see wires or vac hose around front diff and transfer case. Q#3 is there a 4wd button on the shifter? Q#4 does the 4x4 green dashlight turn on when you engage 4wd?

Could be a SR5 missing badges. Roll up windows with auto, tilt, intermittent wipers, a/c. I've never heard of lockers on one yet, but.

Q#1- I have manual locking hubs.
Q#2- Haven't looked, mainly because I don't know what to look for.
    Q#3- No, it's just a regular shifter.
Q#4- No. I shift into 4wd and nothing happens.

I'm currently waiting on a couple o-rings for the hubs because right now they are almost impossible to turn despite being cleaned and lubed.

Get a quality grease, and get yourself some gaskets.

The gaskets can easily be sourced from Napa; good thing you ordered a new o-ring.

I just rebuilt a set recently and I'm going to rebuild another set.

    Cleaning this is pretty self-explanatory.

Go light on the grease; some even use motor oil but I haven't tried it.

Regarding the actual issue of nothing happening when you go into 4x4, I'll leave that to someone else.

Everything is mechanical though so it should be easy to figure out?

If by regular shifter you mean a manual stick 2 hi Neutral 4 lo 4 hi transfer case in addition to an auto matic transmission then the hub repair should get you 4 wheeling.

I'm assuming you know yours is not a shift on the fly 4wd and must be stopped to engage the front differential into 4lo.The manual Tcase may need a little bit of clutch drop before going from 2hi to neutral to 4hi or 4lo. And may require rocking forward / reverse to dissengage the Tcase from front differential. You can drive with hubs locked in 2hi but must come to a complete stop to shift into 4lo.

Have you rebuilt any sets that had corrosion around the seals? I swapped one of mine out and intended to rebuild it, but they're pretty corroded and I'm thinking they would just leak grease everywhere.

Yes I know but the clause "if you have trouble shifting stop" tells it all.

Sounds to me like it might be just an electrical issue with the light on the dash. If it's really not in 4wd then you might have some sticky locking hubs though.

Wiring is something like this, except you don't have the ADD stuff.

That is also qualified as in cold weather.

I never stop to shift, and only slow down below 5mph to go into 4lo. Always goes nice and smooth.

It is winter here in Virginia and seeing how OP lives across the river from me and it was 70 today that cold weather clause shouldn't apply so I suspect another mechanical or electrical issue. Although I don't have hub locks shifting on the fly gets more difficult as years go by. No way could I get into 4lo on a slow roll. I have fresh 75w90 am I missing an adjustment which allows better Tcase shifting?

My only suspicion would be the tcase oil. I haven't experimented with different oils for the tcase, but I know with manual transmissions different oils, even with the same spec on the label, can have drastically different shifting qualities.

I was using Valvoline synthetic 75w90 but switched to Redline in hopes of improved Tcase shifting. Tranny was noticeablely better but Tcase shifting same. My Tcase has always been tight Toyota says normal, shift from full stop. Which it does fine. Just gotta rock to unlock.

    Pics?

The set I have now were pretty bad but I'm still going to rebuild them completely.

Being a Toyota it is possible this has ADD but it was converted to manual Hubs my 4 Runner is like this giving one the best of both or worst depending what breaks

It would not hurt OP to take some pictures of the front differential showing the left side .

OP with manual Hubs the problem is in the Hubs or because any other problem would make some serious noise .

Broken Front differential or CV axle should be quite apparent .

Has it ever shifted into 4High ? New to you truck ??

Missing front drive shaft ?? Yes I have seen strange things over the years.

For what it is worth My hubs stay locked from the first snow to Memorial Day .

I have never shifted into 4Low while moving or 4High for that matter.

Torque Bind can cause some interesting times getting the transfer case to shift

2000 was last year of vacuum ADD which became electronic on all 4wd on 2001 production Tacos. With all the mods done to Tacomas it's hard to tell what's what unless it's known to be STOCK.
