I've got another question on behalf of my niece. She's got a 2014 5-lug. When she turns the truck on the infotainment screen shows the Toyota logo for a bit, then goes black and stays that way. Also, she gets no image for the backup camera. My sister, her mom, is planning to take the truck to the dealer. I'm hoping y'all have some ideas about what may be wrong and save her a trip.

    Thanks for your help

Go to a stereo shop and have them replace the head unit with an aftermarket stereo. It'll be far less expensive than a factory stereo and diagnostic from the dealer.

That's sort of where my head was at, except I'll probably do it for them. My hope was that it was a common problem with a reset procedure.

It would be unusual for a 5 lug to have a fancy system.

Mine didn't even have a camera. Although it was prewired for one and I added it. Along with the rearview mirror that displays the image.

Have you confirmed a camera exists?

Suggest checking out the owners manual. While all 'systems' are shown, it will also tell you how to ID what's actually installed.

The screen going/staying black is a problem. But I'd certainly not take it to a dealer for attention. You'd be better off to just replace it.

You could also shop eBay and the BST section here for an exact replacement if you wished to save some $. Many people replace them because they feel they need 'more' (not because they are broken)

About the only reset you could do would be to pull the head unit and use a jumper to connect the 12 volt in and ground pins to drain the radio completely then plug it back up and see if that works, but I kind of doubt it.

Get an upgrade from Crutchfield. They can direct you to HU with options that she likes along with great technical support to make the install a breeze. Do not take it to the dealer, just replace the radio. Install is simply plug-n-play.

I just got off the phone with my sister and she has some details she left out the first time I talked to her.

The radio actually works. And once in a great while the backup camera actually displays. And, even while the screen is black it responds to touch input.

Does that change the diagnosis any, or is it still "order a new one from Crutchfield"? I'm ok, either way, but I'd like to save her a few bucks if I can.

I guess the question is can she live with it as is? Back up cameras are nice in some situations, but a fairly new thing.

If the radio works, bluetooth works and her steering controls work to change stations/answer the phone, maybe the screen being off doesn't matter much.

But unless you have a friend that's a radio tech and has parts access (those places do still exist) what she has is not worth the cost to repair.

“Is she okay with it being broken? Lol learn to back up noob”
    ...really?

OP: Yes, it’s broken but they’re hard to diagnose. It could be as simple as a loose cable or plug in the back of the unit, or the headunit itself could be bad.
Least expensive replacement would be to follow the forum and look in the classified section for people selling them, or watch the audio section for people installing new radio, then buy their old one.

Thanks for the follow-up. I think they are going to order a new head unit from Crutchfield and I'll install it. I was just wondering if the new info shed any additional light on a cause. And it's more than the backup camera - while the screen reacts to touch, it remains black and you can't tell what you're actually doing.
