So I’ll try my best to explain my situation but bear with me it’s a little confusing. I had my dad doing my valve cover gaskets this past weekend while I was out of town. In the process he broke one of the injector clips (see pics below). My main question is how do I get the wires out of the clip and the new one on? I’m really nervous about tearing up the wires and making a small issue a large one. The broken clip still seems to go on fine should I just leave it ?

Also this is on my 5vz 3.4

And here’s a picture of a good one to compare. You can see difference of where the clip should be

The part number is 90980-11153 for the injector connector.

Each pin has a small "hook" that needs to be pried VERY carefully down. Toyota has a SST for this. But a few different small flathead jeweler's screw driver's will work.
But before you can do that they're terminal retainers that need to be unlocked out of place.

Its detailed in the 03 FSM EWD directory floating around this site. It's located on page 15 of my 04 EWC under "For Waterproof Type Connector" instructions.

In all honesty. It's probably fine. But I'd zip tie it. So it doesn't become disconnected on a wash boarded road...

I think I would have tried to secure it with that zip-tie seen in the fourth photo.

Make sure to use high temp electrical tape or heat shrink tubing. Normal electrical tape will just turn to a gooey mess after a while.

Its really not a difficult process if you do want to replace it. When your looking into the socket, that little piece of white plastic pulls out, which unlocks the tabs on the actual wire ends. Insert a tiny jewelers flathead screw driver right below the wire ends and give it a wiggle while GENTLY pulling the wire out the back of the plastic clip.

Its the same process as every other Toyota factory plug, so if you wanted to practice on another plug it might be helpful.

You should also make sure that the wires are fully inserted into the socket before you begin trying to remove with the jewelers screwdriver. That way they are not getting resistance on the socket.

    ^ What he said!

If you are really unsure, I am sure there is an electrician near that could do it or you. If you can easily get a new connector, I would switch it out. A zip-tie will hold it for a while, but isn't a long term solution.

Alright guys thanks for all the info. I ended up just putting the broken clip back on using a little bit of grey silicone between the little rail and side of the clip plus a skinny little zip for extra insurance. I was more nervous about tearing up the wires and having the mess with the whole harness and I needed my truck back. Truck seems to run fine just hope it never works it’s way loose on a say a washboard road but I think it will be fine. I went ahead and ordered a new clip anyway if it’s ever an issue I’ll pull the intake and fix it correctly I guess.

It's pretty simple to replace it. Somebody should make a video.

I would just get another from a junk yard, cut the wires and solder it on :notsure: (or swap it at the clip / wire terminals if you have a better feeling about that)

That's about what I'd have done. If it's running, and the connector is secure, you should be able to run it indefinitely.

Easier said then done ha. I feel like finding a good Tacoma around here that isn’t already scavenged around here is like finding a diamond in the rough. Not a bad idea though if you used some good solid heat shrink connectors.

I definitely like that idea haha. My wires and everything just felt kinda brittle and I’m not always the best with real delicate things like that. I do have a new clip on the way so who knows I may fix it probably one day when I’m bored.

Seemed like when I put the broken clip connector on there I could still feel it kinda click in. Between that the silicone and zip tie I’m thinking she should be solid

Ok. @mtnkid85 and @License2Ill I can't figure out how to get the connector to release the wire. I've pushed down and pulled out, I pulled up and pulled out and it doesn't budge. What am I doing wrong?

Do I need to pull the white locking tab in the first picture all the way out?

Got it. The white piece does come all the way out then you can see the tabs. My 1st connector broke into a bunch of pieces it was so brittle. 1 down, 5 to go.

I had recently done the valve cover gaskets and 5 of the 6 injector connectors broke. Well, maybe only 4 ... the first one I went to de-pin today still had its locking tab, a little floppy but did positively snap back onto the injector. and does not pull off. That probably means it'll never unlock without being destroyed. These connectors are just pathetic.

On the other hand, the myriad purple-colored zip ties literally holding the truck together likely added 10hp. Prove me wrong. :)

I bought some connectors soon after, in anticipation of going back into it but they turned out to be the wrong ones and the terminals won't slide in. It's frustrating that these things are not standardized even among vehicle manufacturers. My truck is now sitting in the garage for a week or more, awaiting new connectors. Another weekend wasted, waiting on parts.

Toyota pins, in general, are a pain to remove. If I'm replacing the connector I just cut the connector itself and replace. No messing with the pins, a few snips with wire cutters and the pins fall out undamaged.
