Might have been different batches or ages. Was the consistency the same?

Similar in firmness but I want to say the lighter (Caramel) was smoother and clingy-er with the darker (fudge) more easily separated into wet paste-like glops. Both were just as messy if you aren't careful.

The stuff I cleaned out of the old boot was close to the same color if I imagine both mixed.

Resurrecting this thread, as it was the first that came up in my search. Although I am here for a 2nd gen.

I too was confused which grease goes where. There are conflicting reports across the forum, and throughout the rest of the internet.

I believe, for second gens, that:
    • The lighter grease goes in the inboard, or 'tulip' style joint.
    • The black grease goes in the outer, or ball-style CV.
This is based on inspecting the factory service manual. It doesn't provide the colors, but it provides the quantities for both:
    • Inner (tulip-style): 182 to 202 grams.
    • Outer (ball-style): 260 to 280 grams.
My reboot kit, purchased in 2024, came with grease in the following quantities:
    • 125 + 60 = 185 g lighter colored grease
    • 215 + 60 = 275 g black colored grease
So assuming Toyota gave me correct quantities of grease in this kit... while the quantities are different than for first-gen as posted by @turbodb ... the colors are evidently the same.

Ultimately the boots will tear before the differing properties of the grease could possibly matter.
