Input needed: Ingersoll Rand air compressor overland trailer build... Maybe....

I have 60' of seamless gas rated thick walled 1 1/2" steel tube that I want to make a rear bumper out of... Need some practice first.

 

the dewalt cordless doesn't have a long enough life for the price, yet, seen a couple bite the dust already.. and the paslode/impulse, not sure why I don't have one..
I'm waiting for milwaukee to do their cordless framing nailer.. heard bad things about their m18 finish nailers though..
I'll be happy when I can build a house with a solar panel to charge my batteries..
my bigger stuff is still corded, chop/table/pam etc.. but I love a cord/hose free site when possible..

looking forward to seeing the welding projects evolve!

 

make a vice stand or something. Thats going to be one of the projects with my new welder. Or I may just jump in and start my bumper. I found this thread super helpful with my design process and idea of how to build

 

Super cool project! I have had torsion and spring axle trailers and I'll tell you, i will not own a torsion trailer again if I can help it. If you have an issue out in the field a torsion axle is likely a special order item and shipping costs/times etc. whereas a spring axle trailer can almost be rebuilt entirely from a standard auto supply shop.

 

Most princess auto or tractor supply places carry torsion axles. I'm just worried about performance and durability.

 

You can get springs at princess auto and axles. Plus most canadien tires have stuff for axles.

 

So are you yae or nae on the torsion axle? Most people have had good experience with torsion axles. I've just heard anecdotal whispers across the interwebs of torsion axles failing off road.

 

I would be against them. Since your not doing go fast stuff a leaf spring axle would probably be more durable and easier to modify (add a leaf, spring shop, longer leafs, shocks etc.) depending on how you need to change it or set it up.

 

17:45 . Where do you think these air compressors are going ? I've pulled one up Mt Killington no problem. The key is the hitch situation. You need something that will pivot 360 past the receiver.

I've watched a few of these overlanding rig walk around videos now. It seems crazy the amount of gear and creature comforts they bring along on a camping trip. And where are these guys off roading at that they don't get any scratches or rash on anything?

That trailer was pretty sweet though. Having a trailer for extended trips makes a ton more sense than adding 2,000 pounds to your truck and hauling it everywhere you go.

I have a set of old 5100 fronts and my stock leafs off my truck.....and now a welder....

 

would be cheaper in the long run. Only thing that would be pricey would be the hangers. But you could build them out of c channel....

Thanks, good link. I'll be ordering some ubolts from them. 5/8 x 10 inch to replace mine. I don't like how much thread I'm catching with my current ones. My flip kit came with 1/2 x 8 3/4 bolts. Would be ok with the allpro expos but the added 1" spacer makes it a tight fit for the nuts to catch full thread.

My vote is leaf springs from your local princess Auto

Had a work torsion axel go bad and man was it $$$$ to fix we scraped the trailer.

 

What happened to/with the axle?

 

This Axel was on a small equipment trailer that we use to move mainly excavator buckets.

The way this axel worked was two pices of square stock that one fit inside the other with a rubber sleeve between them. The small square stock had a arm that went down to the stub axel with wheel. When load applied it would try and turn the small square stock inside the larger one.


The larger square stock split and opened up. Allowing inner one to turn and things went down hill from there. We could not weld on axel to repair as you would melt the rubber sleeve inside.

This happened due to heavyweight on trailer and rough roads to job sites, water getting inside the two square stocks and sitting there rusting away, freezing.
