Inspection details

Looking for a second generation later years. What should I insist a mechanic check for during an inspection. Should the frame inspection be more thorough than a visual ? Visual on fluid clarity is a give in i assume

 

All the usual, as with any vehicle.
If it’s 4WD, check that the system works in both Hi and Lo.
If it’s and Automatic, take a road trip and make sure you get it into 5th (OD) and see if it shudders.

If it’s a 2.7 check for coolant least as the cross over pipe under the intake manifold.

If it’s a 4.0 check for timing cover leak at/near the power steering pump.

Or take it to a dealership where they work on these trucks daily.
Tell them you’re buying it for your daughter headed to college, and you want to get the truck in good reliable shape. They will find every thing wrong with it…..
They might charge you some diagnostic time, but it’s worth it. Worth every penny.

Then take that paper they give you and do some negotiating.
