Why is 4.88 the minimum? For most peoples tire size 4:30 and 4:56 should be fine? Unless people run 35"+ I don't see a need for 4:88s

With a 6 speed automatic and double overdrive, 4.88 barely cuts it with a 33" tire. These engines don't make power down low, keeping the rpm up a little bit helps solve that. I generally cruise at 70-75 in 5th gear and still have to drop to 4th to climb a hill and keep my speed. That's with stock gears and a 33" tire as of now.

Believe me, you will not want less than 4.88. I have toyo open country at 285 70 17. Doesn't even measure 33, more like a 32. The 4.88 just does it. I have an auto. If you live in a hilly/windy area. 5.13 would even be better. For most areas, I think 4.88 will make most people pretty happy.

That is insane. With a 32" tire in the Manual I rarely drop to 5th above 70. Only the biggest passes require a drop to 5th. I feel bad for how badly Toyota fucked up the auto option in this truck.

The transmission shifts for best gas mileage, not necessarily because the engine doesn't have the necessary power. Lugging it in a lower gear usually isn't the most fuel-efficient way to drive, even though you can force it with the manual transmission. That's one reason why the automatic Tacoma gets better gas mileage than the manual.

The shifting bothers some people who expect to lug their truck around in the super-tall 6th gear with giant aftermarket tires, but it's just the transmission doing its job. Let the truck do its thing and don't worry about what RPM the engine is spinning at.

If you are going to lift your truck and add weight and big tires, plan on doing the right thing for it and change out the gears. You and your truck won't regret it! Especially with these third gens!

Agreed, I always regear for lifts and such. My wrangler with 35's had 4:88 which was a bit much,4:56 probably ideal, but wanted a bit more. So when I saw people going 4:88 for sub 33's I raised my eyebrows. I was thinking of going with Toyota 4:30 but debating now.

4.3 wouldn't do sh** for these trucks. Would seriously be a waste! Because of the double overdrive in the 3rd gens, 4.88 is a must imho. But like I've said before, I have been told my opinion sucks so shut the f@*# up, a few times. So take it for what it's worth!

I live where there are very steep hills not to much flat driving when I go out for the weekend. My weekly driving consists of 2mi one way to work. I find when im climbing even moderate hills 6th is worthless as shit unless I want to feel like I bought the auto and constantly shift up and down. On the easy rolling hills 6th is fine I just set cruise control and off it goes at 70-75 no problem. Quick question without having to dive to deep into the tacoma world archives. Anyone know good tire size for the Old Man EMU 2" lift? I'm getting the heavy kit. Ill be adding bed rack, rooftop tent, front and rear bumpers.

I have 2 quotes for about 900 and 1000 for labor and fluids; both shops are located in Vegas. Just need my gears to arrive and ship out, has anyone ordered from Justdifferentials.com? If so how long did they take to get them in stock and ship them?

No, I know Jason H. And some of the faces. The fella that did my lift has a jeep rock crawler and Dodge pickup.
Yes I would use them over and over again. Good People!
