Good catch, and good to know that the speedo reads off the wheel speed sensor. I thought it read off the transmission like my old truck.

i'm running those tires (trail grapplers) and have 4.56s installed. they're quiet and I've been nothing but happy. I can actually stay in 6th gear (auto) while carrying my RTT and bed rack. I've put it through the paces too and I don't have one complaint. I went back and forth a bunch about 4.88s but 1000 mile excursions made me fear the higher RPMs at highway speeds.

I cant maintain 75 with slight head wind with only a dirtbike in the back and I am still bone stock... I am used to hunting. So if you can maintain speed with an RTT and bed rack I think I will be fine with 4.56s..? Still curious about 1-3rd gear, though.

san diego gear and axle did the install. I was his first, but I did it back in late july/early august. I know I had to get a new carrier deck in the front to make it all fit. He had told me he got the gears from nitro, but maybe that wasn't the case. either way, I've stoked on the outcome.

Not to have them install. But to purchase and have installed elsewhere.

It's livelier of the line and I don't notice anything sluggish about 1-3, so i'm guessing that's a good thing. I also had a bunch of gear through baja, like an extra 400 lbs of gear and fluids, and still maintained 70 when the roads allowed.

it's better. without adjusting speedo and all metrics associated (with tires it's roughly 6-7% difference in speedo) I was getting ~13.5mpg, now I'm closer to 15mpg. that's for mixed city/hwy. Just city is prob 13mpg, but I haven't been paying enough attention. I just wanted it to feel better. If I was looking to be more efficient, my biggest area for improvement would be my driving.

This is a genuine question since I am only moderately mechanically inclined. But I went with 4.56s because I knew I wanted to lessen the load on the tranny/engine with the larger tires (285/70/17) and increased weight of overland gear. I shied away from 4.88s because I didn't want to what I calculated to be 2500-2700 rpm at highway speeds for the long distances i'd be going. Like I said earlier, I've been real happy with the outcome, but do you think my smile would've been bigger with 4.88s?
