I was told by a shop in San Diego (pro gear that's focused just on gears for the last 30 years) that they use really good oil and it lasts through the break in period. They tell they'll check the oil at 500 miles but generally a change isn't necessary.

    Thoughts on that?

Do you want metal shavings floating around in your oil?

shavings probably have caused bearings and what not to go out. so has it caused issues before, most likely. What does a couple hrs of your time, and some money in some diff fluid hurt?

Doesn't hurt me... Concerns me if it hurts them and they don't recommend it...

You just spent over $2000 on new gears.
    Oil is not that expensive.

It is when you just emptied your bank account on a third gen, maxed out credit cards on mods and gear swap, and then living paycheck to paycheck eating top Ramen just trying to make the truck payment on your 84 month loan.

Unless they do the break in and change the oil before it leaves, i would definitely change it.

metal shavings in bearings isn't good, if you don't wanna change your oil, don't.

You still haven't answered my question. My guess is you can't answer it because you have no experience in it, so you dance around it with best practices and "probably."

When Toyota replaced my rear diff they didn't tell me to come back and change out the gear oil. Now maybe that's because they break it in on a test stand and change out the fluid before shipping out to install but I have my doubts.

Like i said, do what you wish. We recc changing after 500 miles just like many other shops do. just picked up my wifes car from the dealer, told me after 750 miles to bring in and change fluid.

What? The dealer asked you to come back and change out the differential fluid? Is this for a new car? What make/model? I've never had a dealer ask me to do this including Honda, BMW, GMC, Ford and multiple Toyotas.
