Got my 4.88's installed yesterday and so far so good!! The truck feels awesome and doesn't bog down like it used to with stock gears. I haven't really gotten a chance to cruise on the highway yet, but it sits at just about 2100 rpm at 65mph which is perfect!

Still obviously going through the break in and haven't really been able to get a feel for the full MPG and acceleration benefits but I'm happy so far!

    edit: I have 285/75/16 tires

Kind of an expensive solution though. If you don't have larger tires, you will be turning high rpm on the highway.

Talked with a local gear shop on putting 4.88's in. They explained to me that they had another 3rd gen do the same and it experienced some mild humming. They replaced them with another set and had the same hum. Anybody else experience mild noise with Nitro 4.88 in the off-road?

Little bit of humming with only 30 miles on them so far. I'm going to withhold judgement till I get more miles and a fluid change.

From what I understand humming comes from improper spacing/bad installation. A friend at Toyota said the shims for the 3rd gen are hard to come by. When he was re gearing mine he said there were none left in the country. If I had to guess I'd say that these shops can't get the proper shims in and are calling the spacing "good enough" and hoping for the best.

Looks like ill need to discuss it a bit more with them. Anybody have recommendations for a gear shop in the San Diego area?

I have a hum from about 55mph to 65mph on the highway. Slightly frustrating, cant even hear it if the radio is on quiet. I'm particular with my truck. Its louder on the deceleration.

My question: is there anything I can do about it? Can these gears be adjusted? I have 3k on them.

You have it with new 4.88 gears? Or factory gears?

Attention everyone looking to regear a TRD Sport auto V6 or a SR5 auto 4cylinder!!! The master install kit coming from Nitro DOES NOT HAVE THE CORRECT CARRIER BEARINGS!!! As of right now, getting the correct ones is an act of Mexican congress cause they are not a US made part. I ended up having to use a pair of front carrier bearings and shave a half inch on either side of the axle housing to stuff everything in. If you do a regear, DO NOT REMOVE THE STOCK CARRIER BEARINGS!!! They must be reused. I informed Nitro they needed to put this information on their website so others don't run into the same issue as me. As far as the gears go and drivability? It's great!!! I have only about 20 miles on them as of now but will be driving 150 tomorrow and 300 miles on Saturday so we'll see how everything breaks in...

I scored some actual bearings that it needs though. I'll hang onto them in case this thing comes a part.

Did Nitro say they would possibly get correct ones for their kit? seems like some people who have this kit could be in some trouble...

Drew at Nitro didn't say yay or nay. I told him where I sourced thw correct ones from. And told him the disappointment and frustrations I had with their suppos-ed master install kit. He said they had sold a bunch and I was the first one that had really complained. I guess everyone is just doing a ring and pinion swap and not replacing the carrier bearings. Most everyone's trucks don't have a lot of miles so... also there is relatively small amount of people regearing the open diff 8 inch. They only come in trd sport auto and 4cylinder autos. Everyone else has the new 8.75 which is what the master install kit has bearings for. The 8 inch non e locker carrier is a 53mm inside diameter bearing and the 8.75 rear is a 50mm bearing. Luckily the front carrier bearings are 53 mm but are 16th of an inch wider which is why we had to cut into the diff housing.

im remembering that a guy on here I think his name here is HONEY with a beautiful truck, he had noises or hum as well , I do believe he has since resolved the issue, I think they were nitro gears , I better do some digging on the forum here to see for sure.

What's the deal with the rms polish? Do you order them that way? Or is that something you do 3rd party?
