With my other car, a 1997 Miata, we are always pluggin in radios from much newer Mazdas.

Does anyone knows if the same can be done to our Tacomas?

I'd like to stick, with a "factory look", a post 2006 Yota insatalled radio.

Right now, my 1997 Miata, has a Mazda 6 radio from model year 2007. It works like a peach!

Are you talking about a radio from a 2nd/3rd gen and putting it in a first gen?

I'm not sure they'd fit without a ton of fabrication/plastic work. The radios in the newer trucks are much more integrated into the dash than the 1st gens, which are basically just a box set in the dash.

I don't think the newer Taco radios are the conventional din/double din sizes...

There's something like this, but this looks bigger than a double din... (also stolen from interwebs)

It could be from a Scion, Camry or whatever. The radio on my Miata, is from 2007 Mazda 3, but it could fit a Mazda 6 too.

Doesn't matter. Seems like most newer vehicles come with non-DIN size radios because it looks cooler, and they're more integrated into the dash.

    Here's a Camery dash - also won't fit in a first gen:

Some Scions probably have a double din, a good way to check is go to Crutchfield.com and enter in car make/model and it will tell you what size it is.

Has anyone installed a double din radio from a newer Toyota?

In case you still didn't understand the title of the thread.

IMO, you're better off just getting an aftermarket double din radio.

Hint: (they usually aren't double din sizes... probably not)

Lucky for me, I'm free to ask questions, as IMO I prefer the look and sound of factory HU's.

And according to radios seen on Ebay by yours truly, both Camry and Scions did come with double dins.

If it is a double din. yes, it'l fit (obviously)

if it's not, like all the examples I posted above, it won't fit.

No, not necesarilly. Just because it's a double din, does not mean that the outside dimensions will fit withing the confines of the Taco, hence the thread. Nothing obvious about that.

If a double din deck doesn't doesn't fit in a double din hole, that's a pretty lame sizing convention... But perhaps the size doesn't take into account the extra plastic crap on the face that "integrates" the deck into the dash. That's pretty easy to see, though.

I put a double din from a Scion in my truck when I first got it. It bolted right in & the plug was the same. Only thing I had to do was trim the border/lip on the back side of the radio/ac vent bezel. Did not affect anything cosmetically. I think it was from a 1st gen xB. Got it for $50 & only reason I ran it at the time was cause it played MP3 CDs. Damn thing was kinda ugly though. I eventually got rid of it though & got an Alpine.

EDIT: This is the one I had.

Also, IIRC, you have to use the brackets from the stock radio, they bolt right onto the Scion radio. But then again, not sure if the Scion uses different brackets, I got the Scion radio with no brackets at all.

There's a ton of info on Scion radio swaps here: Was a huge trend with the 4runner guys up until a few years ago.
