I've used this McGuard lock before on a Silverado and it really works. I noticed the other day that someone actually tried to steal the tailgate off the Silverado. I'll post a picture of the red tailgate. You can see scratch marks where someone used a screw driver to try and remove it.

I installed one on my Tacoma today. I used the Ford adapter that comes with the kit. ill post pictures of the blazing blue tailgate. It fits a little loose compared to the Silverado.

Still don't understand the point of wasting money when you can just lock the tailgate with a key and be done with it.......:crazy:

My tailgate has been stolen before while locked. Locking it with a key didn't help the thieves bypass the lock in the front. Someone told me they just open up the back of the tailgate and unlock it. Around here entire neighborhoods get there tailgates, plastic Bedliners, bed covers, toolboxes and wheels stollen. Literally in one night 10 trucks will get everything stole in one street, in there driveway.Ford, Gm, Dodge etc they don't care. Tailgate theft is really high in Dallas Texas.

being in Texas, won't a gun take care of this, or is that not considered protecting your family? You take something from my family, that in my eyes is causing harm, maybe just not fearing for my life.

Honestly if I lived in an area like that, I would have a shitbox, and bank all the money i would spend on a new vehicle till I could get to f out.

Great tip Jose! Not many seemed to have tried alternatives to those custom aluminum ones that someone is posting on TW.

I do not understand "bypass the lock in the front " what does this mean? In the front of the truck when having an electric poplock ?

When the officer was making the police report he told me that a lot of tailgates where locked and still stolen. The officer said the tailgate key locks are being bypassed.
Now I think that what there doing is just unscrewing the back plate on the tailgate and simply unlocking the tailgate. There's only about 7 screws to take off.
All I'm trying to do is share the experience I had. I sometimes forget to manualy lock the tailgate on the Silverado and noticed that someone tried to pry the McGuard off and was unsuccessful.
All I'm trying to do is make it harder for an opportunistic thief to steal my stuff.

Note , a cheap star drive socket and ratchet to take off the hinge is only 30 secs .

Can you reach the lower bolt with the gate installed? (I'll need to look, assuming there is a lower bolt)

This thing is under $20. If you're somewhere that there's a good risk of losing your tailgate, seems like cheap insurance.

No it isn't going to stop James Bond. Nothing will stop a sufficiently determined thief. We just try to make it so other people's stuff seem easier to take.

Let me tell you what if your tailgate is locked they are going to have to do some serious damage to it in order to steal it and then whats the purpose of even taking it if it takes that long to get it off and they can't resell it as brand new if its all messed up..........

I haven't looked at a 16 or 17 tailgate yet but why can't a hose clamp work like I have on my 11. not foolproof but will sure slow thieves down.

LOL I don't. Seems the nice areas with better cars get targeted more. They must not like beat up tailgates from the ghetto.
