Screenshot_20170427-072316.jpg 1493590291561-222260301.jpg I'm still a noon here, how would I install the diode? And would you be able to draw the diagram using blue, yellow and the wires on this switch? I'm sorry, I love electronics...just not on vehicles.

I've never actually used a diode, so I'm not 100% sure how to install it, and I don't want to mislead you.

For that switch, it'll work, but not quite as advertised. Because you'll be switching a ground through it, it won't light up like you'd want it to. The green wire and the orange-ish wires are the only ones you would use.

I like your spirit! The point of a diode is to let electricity flow through it one way, but not the other. The purpose of having one here is so that when you use your switch to turn your lights on, you're not giving a ground to your dome light too (turning them on). Hope that makes sense.

That does make sense, hence the reason why I can ground the switch correct? Also, is there more than one type of diode that I should look for? And between what posts should I solder it? (Sorry if it was already said, running around like crazy today.

I have no idea about the types of diodes. Maybe @Ridgeline001 can chime in and help out. I believe it goes where the green rectangle is, but I'm not positive on which orientation.

I have a 13' but I didn't need to install any diode to get everything working. Just use a 3 pos switch. Top-lights on, middle-off, bottom- on with dome light.

I got the switch from OTRATTW. You can see it on the bottom. I had the switch cover etched with "dome" on the bottom and "on" on the top. Middle position is off. This switch has independent leds so even though it is switching ground, you can wire the leds to light up with the dash lights.

This is how the switch would be wired, (minus the led illumination) You would have to fuse an always on 12v to your lights. Disclaimer: I do not know how much power the dimming module can handle so do at your own risk. I have mine dimming the dome light w/led bulbs, two long led strips, and 6 led rock lights which draw 175 milliamps each.

Should I go out and buy a 3 position switch or is this something I can do on my push switch?

To wire it like mine, you would need a 3 position switch.

He wants to do what mine does, but he only has a spst switch.

That is where it would be placed. The other option is how it was done with the 3 position switch above. A rectifier diode should be used if a simple NO switch is used.

Rectifier diode should be used. Radio Shack is probably your best bet local. You will cut the wire and insert the diode in between. I recommend using a wire butt splice on each side. Cut the plastic off, then crimp and solder. Make sure to put a piece of heat shrink on each side of wire BEFORE you install the diode inline. Diodes on work one way for current flow so make sure it is installed in the correct orientation.
