Installed rock lights would also like them to be switched

Okay, I believe I got it. Minus the fact that it doesn't work. I think I got too small of a diode. Unfortunately it was the largest radio shack had (they were closing down) Thanks you to all who helped me. Gonna make some orders online and try again later this week

 

Did you try reversing the diode? The direction matters.

If it doesn't work, is the anode side hooked to the negative wire coming FROM the dome light? That is the first thing to check. If the diode is too small it could be blown open but the switch should still work.
