Kind of. It will only decrease mpg if you are running WOT every time your foot touches the pedal. There are many posts on here that have people with supercharged tacos with the same MPG as before. When you are in closed loop, the ECU controls your a/f mixture. Since it's programmed to keep it at stoich, it will adjust the fuel according to how much air you let in. What people commonly refer to as the gas pedal is a misnomer. The accelerator actually is connected to your throttle body, where it's a drive by wire or mechanical, it's the same thing. The pedal opens/closes the throttle body letting in more/less air. The ECU compensates for this with how much fuel it injects.

There is a whole lot of theory behind this that would take a book to explain. Simply stating that increasing hp makes your mpg worse is misleading. If that were the case, those hypercars would only be able to make it from one gas station to the next with their 1000+ hp.

I said stock, and since the yotas can't be tuned, the only reason I'd see the need for one is if boosted.

The other day my buddy and I removed the APR intake off of his stock a5, because it started throwing codes. His reader read error 1 as too lean at idle. I'm guessing that the intake was sucking in too much air and the computer wasn't putting enough fuel in. Regardless, it made him throw a CEL, and after we put his stock air box back in, the light went off.

I'm not saying that an intake is going to cause a major problem on every car and truck, but relocating the MAF, etc can all cause problems, not to mention a lot of times you'll get a decent performance boost from a k&n or afe drop in.

Most first engine mods on any stock car is an air filter. Your buddy's a5 is not a typical example, so making a generalized statement isn't valid. If the problems happened to even 50% of the stock cars/trucks people have added air filters to, I would agree, but that's not really the case.

As for the drop in filters, I had a K&N drop in. It did squat.

Unless your forced induction an intake is worthless, and yes can cause more harm then good. Even if you are FI it doesn't help a lot either.

Good at drawing hot air into an engine.
People get them because it's a cheap easy mod and makes the engine a little noisier

Not even close. Check the 3000GT/Stealth crowd or any other platform with boost. On a boosted car, an open air intake makes a huge difference.

I think the 2005-2011 tacomas may benefit a little off the aftermarket intakes but even then I'd only get the TRD Intake. The 2012-2015 already have a somewhat upgraded version intake which I prefer over any after market intake. I personally liked the look of the volant intake with the ram scoop and was close to installing one on my 13 but the price wasn't vary desirable just for looks.

They should make some with thorns so that the harder you step on it the more it will hurt you therefore you may save gas like that or even consider walking instead.

Then you'd need a set of Weathertechs to collect the pool of blood under your foot!

I've never seen a K&N intake from the factory cause the oil problem. Always see it happen when people over oil their filters.

No doubt, but that doesn't mean the intake filter isn't a restriction either. My entire point is that making generalized statements like ones in this thread are misleading.

This is why I went KVA.....K&N tube with Volant Box to breathe thru oem fender well hole with clear lid for visual & an AFE DryFlo filter for no oiling........

I have a better seal around the tube entering the filter box now to keep engine bay air out.

Can you post pics of your better seal around the air box on you KVN intake? I had the same idea about incorporating the K&N tube to the volant system but could not get it to seal up. I have the volant filter as well as the K&N filter to choose from, but want the air box sealed from hot air....

Forgot about this, lemme see about gettin a pic after work..............basically a rolled up piece of pipe insulation with a zipstrip inside it is wedged between backside of filter and inside of filter box that goes all the way around the intake tube blocking any engine bay air and whatever dust/moisture could get in there.
