Alright, first post. Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, but here we go:

Looking to install 4wd on my '12 TRD sport factory 2wd tacoma. I was talked out of the 4wd on the lot and now, obviously, regretting that one. Looking for some opinions on my options:

    1. Is installation even a viable option?
    2. Would Toyota be willing to do an installation or do I need to look elsewhere?
    3. I'm definitely in no position to install myself, so if I were to go private market on the install, what kind of prices would I be looking at for parts and labor?

Anything else I need to consider/suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Sadly it would be cheaper to sell the truck and buy the 4x4. On the bright side you could spend about 1500-2000 on a new arb locker with air compressor. And have a very capable prerunner. Which is what i will be doing.

    same shit as everyone else
Go back to the dealership and buy a 4wd.

How did they talk you out of it? Maybe you don't really need it? Just lift it up a little and put some bigger tires on it. It'll still be a bad ass truck!

Trade it in, it's not worth it...

You will need: A Front Diff, A Transfer case, CV axles, A front drive shaft, A new rear drive shaft, new transmission, 4wd spindles, some electronic shit. I think I'm missing a few things, but you get the point?

You're either looking at like thousands of dollars to add that stuff to a brand new PreRunner, or you could maybe be adding like $50 a month on your monthly payment for trading in your PreRunner for a 4x4.

Not the answer I was looking for, guys, but seems pretty unanimous, haha. Tiedie-- I'm in between raleigh and durham right now. Got her at fred anderson about four months ago. Where are you?

What kind of answers were you looking for? :notsure: With enough time and money, it can be done. But that kind of surgery just to add factory 4wd to a brand new 2wd truck is not worth it. Your entire powertrain warranty would be shot, your truck would be down for a considerable amount of time and you'll end up spending thousands on the swap especially if you can't do the work yourself. It can be done, the reason no has done it is it's not even close to cost effective.

use the search bar theres a thousand threads on this. Personally, I'd only do this if you plan on throwing on solid front axle and one bad ass twin stick transfer box. Otherwise you're looking at about 10grand and a lot of wasted time for the same effect as trading it in.

As I said before. Get a ARB locker on it. Will it be as good as 4x4? No. Will it be a very capable truck? Yes.

Welcome. I'm in Raleigh too. I'm in the "Trade it" group. I buy parts from Fred Anderson, but could never get any deals made there as far as vehicle purchases. I deal with Leith Toyota over on Capital Blvd. They have always been good to me. I did stick it to them by trading a 2012 Mustang GT that they gave me WAY too much for recently. But I like dealing with them.

Gotten 4 Toyotas at Toyota Carlsbad (Calif.), and they always make sure I am getting what I want... They are great, no pressure, no BS.
