I have a 2011 Tacoma with a towing package. I ordered it with the towing package and I drove it off the lot brand new with it installed (not sure if that makes it factory installed). I have a 4 pin trailer connector on the back and want to install the 7 pin so I can use the brake controller for a camper. I have the connection under the dash for the brake controller and the 4 pin to 7 pin conversion part. Where does the black and blue wire from the 7 pin adapter connect into the truck? I feel like if the truck already has wiring for a brake controller in the truck, then there should be a connection outside too.

OP, do you have pics of what you have right now? Kind of confusing. Do you have a standalone Toyota part # pig tail to wire to a brake controller? Did you already find the plug for the brake controller under the dash?

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong here but it's my understanding that ALL TRD Sport Tacomas came with the factory towing package. so OPs truck has it but it seems like for some reason the rear of the truck is missing the 7 way round plug. In any case, a new one should be installed. You should double check with the dealer about the towing package and go from there.

I don't know for sure if all Sports came with towing, but if it doesn't already have the 7-pin, something is amiss.

OP, take a look under the hood and see if you have the oil cooler and the tranny cooler. If you do, you in fact have the towing package and your trailer harness connector is weird and can be replaced. If not, you do not have factory towing.

If you don't have factory towing, I wouldn't know what to do about adding the brake controller.

Even if you have tow package from what i understand you still need a 3rd party brake controller. The wiring and 7pin is there to make it easier for the install and wiring the controller.

Looks like I have a tranny cooler and I have the connection for the brake control, just need to put on this 7 pin adapter but I don't know where to tap it the blue and black wires to the truck

I know the brake controller connects to the connection, but how do I get that to the camper brakes?

I know this may sounds like a stupidly obvious request, but when you look back there near the connector, is there anything back there that looks like remnants of a trailer harness? I could be mistaken, but based on what you've said so far, it looks like you have factory towing, but someone hacked up the original harness and replaced it with a 4-pin. If that's the case, there might still be connections back there that you can simply just extend and reconnect.

Once you have the 7-pin installed, it's just a matter of putting the pigtail to your brake controller, then plug and play.

How many of you have an earlier model that have a 7 pin. Maybe it was not implemented yet:notsure:
Otherwise maybe what he^ said because you have the tow package!

Mine is a 2005 OR and it has the 7-pin. I've never seen a factory (unmodified) towing package without it.

Did you find split-loom harness that carry the other wires back to the 4-pin? I'd suggest pulling the end of that apart to see if you have any black and blue wires hidden inside/cut/tucked up somewhere. Lower your spare too so you can see and get to everything better.

Yeah, if you could trace where those wires from the 4-pin are coming from, maybe even post a few pics, that'd be helpful.
I'm at a loss about as much as you are right now...
